I met Larry Campbell who plays with Yorma.
I met him originally when I got
invited to do this Neil Young tribute at Carnegie Hall and he was the band leader
and I've been in awe of him ever since and I ended up being invited to play the
Ramble.
I got to go up there and open for Levon and Larry and the band the year
before Levon passed and meet him which was high high on my bucket list
was you know something I'll cherish till the day I die.
And so the song that we
we chose was a was a version that the band did [D] of an [D] old classic obviously
Long Black Veil and and I kind of got the idea we were playing around with a
few [G] different things and trying to come up with some kind of kooky ideas but but
we were running late in soundcheck basically and I was like you know what I
remembered hearing Larry and [G#] Teresa cover Long [G] Black Veil at one time I
always loved hearing them do it and I was like how about that [C] and then Yorma
was like I actually know a verse of that and I was like and and [G] so Nick was like
okay and then we just jumped on it and it was it was and it came together
quickly and it was a lot of fun and that got it that gave us a chance for Larry
to get the fiddle out which is always welcome as well [C] and to get Nick on
[G] mandolin while Larry was on fiddle which [C] was kind of a secret project of mine I just
want I like hearing that Dixieland stuff yeah.

And they all did agree [D] that the man who ran [C] looked a lot [G] like me.

[A] [G] You just said son what is your alibi?
You [D] were somewhere else.
[C] Then you don't [G] have to die.
I spoke not a word though it meant my life.
I [D] had been in the arms [C] of my best [G] friend's wife.
[C] She warms [G] me still [C] in long [G] black veil.
She [C] visits [G] my grave [C] where the night winds [G] [E]
wail.
Nobody [C] knows, nobody [G]
sees, [C] nobody [D]
knows [C] but me.

But sometimes at night when the cold wind moans [D] in a long black veil [C] she cries over [G] my bones.
