[C] [D]
[G] [D] Lately I've been running on [Em] faith
[G] [D] What else can a poor boy [Em] do?
[G] [C] But my world will be right
[Bm] [D] Love [F#] comes all the [G] year
[C] [D]
[G] Lately [D] I've been talking in
[Em] [E] Layla, [G] um, sort of mystified me that, um,
I've done it the same all these years
and never ever considered trying to revamp it
and a lot of artists do that, you know
Bob Dylan, for instance, changes everything every time he plays it
and I thought this was another great opportunity
to just take it off on a different path
and to put it to a shuffle
and for a start making it acoustic
denied all the riffs really
they would have sounded a bit weak I think on the acoustics
so it just seemed to become jazzier somehow
and of course I'm singing it a whole octave down
so it gives it a nice, a nice kind of [A] atmosphere
[C#m] What will you do [D#m] when you get lonely?
[C#m] No one waiting [E] by your side
[F#m] [B] You've been hurt, [E] I know but you know
[F#m] You [B] know it's just your [E] foolish mind
[A] Layla, [A#] [C] got me [Dm] on my knees
[A#] [C] Dang it [Dm] darling, please
[A#] [C] Darling, [D] don't you leave my world in [A#] black
[C] Trees in Heaven [Am] [G] was written for the film Rush
which was directed by Lily Zanuck
and it was a good opportunity
because it was really needed to illustrate loss
because of what happens in the movie
and it was a good opportunity for me to write about my son
about the loss of my son
and also [A] have some way to put it
Would you know [F#m] my name
[A]
[D] If [A] I saw you in [E] Heaven
[E] [A] Be [F#m] the same
[A] [D] [A] If I saw you [E] in Heaven
[Em] [F#m] I must be [C#] strong
[Em]
And carry [F#] on
Cause I [Bm]
know I [E] don't belong
[A] [E] [F#m] There may be several [E] versions of this
but the first [G] one I heard of San Francisco Bay Blues
was Jesse Fuller
Jesse Fuller and it was
Jesse Fuller is a one man band
He had a bass drum and a foot bass
and harmonicas and kazoos
and a great big 12 string guitar
and that was another one of those songs
which he played in a pub to get free beer
and also very accessible
and a good sort of sing along
and I just wanted to do this song
because it's never gone away
and like the other songs in my set
like Hey Hey and Alberta
those songs have never left my head
they're always there and part of my life
[C]
Big city
There's the bad boys singing
[F]
All I heard my baby sing
I'm going [E] to be a bad boy
Waiting for you to call my name
[F] Baby I'm going to get back to stay
[C] It's going to be [Em] another brand [A] new day
[D] I'm going to put your [G] baby down
By the San [C] Francisco Bay
[A] Hey Hey
[D] I'm going to put your [G] baby down
By the San Francisco [C]
Bay
[A] [D] Yeah I'm going to put [G] your baby down
By the San Francisco [C] Bay
I'm going to put your baby down
By the [G] San Francisco Bay
I often enjoy singing more
with an acoustic situation
because when you're on stage with an electric band
and you've got the PA
and everything is at a pretty high volume
you usually haven't got much to pitch to
other than the monitors which are in front of you
and it's a very artificial setting
you can't really hear your own voice
as it comes out of your mouth
you have to depend on the loudspeakers
and it's such a joy to sing with a full band acoustically
and [G] be able to hear your voice
and you can, I find it [D] so much more easy
to adjust the volume of your own voice
where on stage I seem to be singing flat out all the time
here you can sing quietly
you know, you've got more dynamic range
[E]
[B] [E] Sailing down [B] behind the sun
[C#] Waiting for [F#] my [B] friends to come
[E] Praying [F#] for the heat [G#m] and rain
[C#]
To [D] restore [A] my soul [C#m] again
[A] Just a tow [A] ride on the river
[E] How [A] did I get here?
[F#m] What [B] have I done?
[C#m] Where will [A] all my [B] hopes arise?
[E] How [A] will I know Him
[F#m] When I [G#m] look in my [C#m] father's eyes? Shhh!
[A] [E] [F#m]
[G#m] [C#m] [A]
