Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome on the stage Elvis Costello!
Can I say a few words, Steve?
I want to say a few words about Linda.
About ten years ago, I got an invitation to go and write some songs with Paul.
I was a younger man then, and it wasn't the easiest thing in the world to go and meet one of your heroes and try and write songs with him.
But I was trying to be all grown up and take my best foot forward.
And she was very, very kind, and in just a small personal way, I just want to say a thank you to her for making me and my wife feel very at ease and welcome.
And that was a quality that most anybody that met her will tell you of, quite apart from everything that we know, how she stood up for what she believed in.
And, you know, she's not alone in those things, so we mustn't make it too unusual and try and make it like a deity.
We're talking about a human person with very fine qualities, which you see in her beautiful children.
This is a song we wrote together, it's called Backstowers Girl.
I
[Am] [G] [E]
[C] [F] [C]
feel such sorrow, [F] I feel [C] such shame.
I know I [F] won't arrive [C] on time, before [G] whatever's out there [Dm] is gone.
[G] What [C] can I do?
[F] That day [C] is gone.
It's just a promise [F]
that [C] I made.
I said I'd walk [F] in [C] her feet.
[G] Hearts torn in tears, I thought before.
A scar in [C] my heart, they'll never show.
That [Am] day is gone.
[Em]
That [F] day is done.
[Eb] [C]
You know where [Am] I've gone.
I won't be [G] coming back.
[E] That day [C] is done.
[F]
Well, I recall [F] the time [C] and place where they announced a precious face.
[B] I thought [G] at once my [Dm] heart would [G] burst.
And still [C] every time [F] is [C] like the first.
There was applause as she stepped up.
I wished that I [F] could
[C] interrupt.
I made [G] no sound.
I made [D] no sound.
I [C] know I [F] must stay [C] underground.
That [Am] day is gone.
[Em] That [F] day is done.
[C] You know [Am] where I've gone.
I won't [G] be coming [Ab] back.
That [C] day is [F] gone.
[C]
[E] [F]
[C] [G] That's why she [F] walks.
Or so [Ebm] they [Eb] say.
She always [C] knew just what I needed.
Now if [F] she would just look [Gb] my way.
One [G] time before they proceed.
She [C] sprinkles flowers in the [C] dark.
That's when the storm [F]
comes to [C] her.
I know [G]
[D] she'll face.
[Em] She walks [C]
away from my resting place.
That [Am] day is done.
[Em]
That [F] day is done.
[C]
You know [Am] where I've gone.
I won't [G] be coming back.
[Abm] That day [C] is done.
[F]
[C] You [Em] know where I've [Am] gone.
I won't [G] be coming back.
[Ab] That day [E] is done.
[F] [C] That [E] day is done.
[F] [C] That day is done.
