Hi, I've had a lot of requests for a how-to video or just a tutorial on Angelus, my arrangement of Angelus.
So I thought I might put this together.
Hopefully you find it helpful.
I'm just going to go through the chords and then the rhythm I use and then how I play the melody.
And again, I hope you find it helpful.
Please leave any questions below and I'll try to address them.
So for Elliot Smith Angelus, I play an A minor, which is my first chord, [Em] with that
ninth in there and the seventh and then [D] D, then E [Em] minor, [D] D, [C] C.
Let's [Am] see here.
Yeah, that's right.
[D]
[C] That's basically the introduction and the verses.
There's that second part.
I walk up to the [B] B major, [D]
D, [C] C, [G]
G, [A] A, and then I walk to the [C] C, [D] D, [C] C,
[Em] E minor, [D]
D, [C] C.
And then I do the [D] little D [G] to C and I hold on to that D for the ninth.
So [Am] those are the chords for the introduction verse.
[B] And then there's that little bridge part.
I'm not playing it exactly correctly, but B and then I kind of walk up the bass, C [G#m] sharp,
[D] D, [F#] F sharp, [B] B, [D]
D, [C] C, [G]
G, [A] A, and then walk [C]
C, [D] D, [C] C, and [E] E [D] minor, D, [C] C, and I do that
little [D] [C] D to C ninth kind of thing.
[Am] So those are most of the chords that I'm using.
Let's see here.
The rhythm I'm using, [Em] you really have to slow this down and practice it with [Am] a metronome.
But it's kind of
So let's see if I can really slow that [A] down.
[Am]
[F#] [Am] [D]
[Em]
[C]
I'm not playing it the exact same way every time, but the rhythm more or less is that
alternating left hand, right hand kind [Am] of feel.
[Em] [Am] [D]
[Em]
[C]
[B]
[D] [C]
[G] [A]
[C]
So I'm trying to recreate some of the [N] acoustic guitar rhythm in my piano part.
[Am]
[D]
[Em] [D] [C]
[Am]
[D] [Em]
[D] [C]
[B] [D] [C]
[G] [A]
[Em] [C] [C]
[Em] [D]
[C] [D]
[C] [D]
[G] So that part, the C to C nine [D] to D, I'll slow that [C] down.
[D] [C]
[D] [C]
[D] Again, I'm just trying to mimic some of [G] the rhythm in the guitar part that Elliot played.
For the melody, [A] [B]
[D]
[Em] [C]
it actually lends itself pretty well to the chord voicings I'm using.
[Am] [D]
[Em] [D]
[G] [C] [B]
[D] [C] [G]
[A] [C]
[Em] [D] [C]
[G]
So when I was working [Am] on this, I seriously took a metronome and slowed it way, way down
[D]
[Em]
[D] [Bm] [C]
[Am]
until [B] I started to feel the rhythm and I didn't have to think about it so much.
So it was a lot smoother when I played it.
That bridge Don't start
[D] [F#] [B]
[D]
[F#] [B] [D] [C]
[G] [A]
[C]
[B]
[D] [F#]
[B] [D] [C]
[G] [A] Really, to get this smooth enough to where it sounds musical, you really do have to practice,
or I had to practice it over and over with the metronome to get it smooth.
That's kind of how I play it.
I never play it exactly the same every time.
I do use that chord progression and then that melody in my right hand.
If you have any questions, leave them below and I'll try to get back to you.
I hope that helps a little bit, at least breaking it down, kind of what I do.
I think you could also slow the original video down on YouTube and that might be helpful.
Anyway, thank you as always for watching.
I'm very humbled that people come and check out the videos I make.
Thank you so much.
