Hey guys, what's up?
[E] It's Claude Johnson and yes, I look like a [A] total wild man right now.
I haven't combed my hair today, I haven't shaven, but who cares, right?
Because guitar playing is more important than shaving.
So, let's get into today's lesson.
So let's [G] continue our discussion of using single [B] notes in between the chords.
Here's the same progression we used last time, G, A minor, C, [G] D.
[Am]
[C] [D] [G]
[Am] [C]
[D] And we'll [G] add in some single notes.
[Am] [C]
[D] [G] [Am]
[C] [D]
[B] Okay, so last time we talked about bass note runs, and now I'm using a technique which is basically picking patterns.
So, the idea is that instead of just [G] strumming the chord, I can pick the notes [B] individually.
It's a very basic concept, and I'll just show you a couple things that I'm doing.
[B] First of all, I'm using the pick and pluck technique, which [F#] I've showed a bunch of times in different videos.
And what I'm doing is I'm using my pick to hit the bottom [G] string, and then I'm using my other two fingers, my middle and my ring finger, [F#] to pluck some of these higher strings.
[B]
Now, the exact [A#] picking pattern that you're [D] going to use will depend a little bit on what song you're playing, and of course, your own [G#] individual preferences.
[B]
So, but I'll just show you what I'm doing here.
[F#] So, basically, the strum pattern, I'm starting out with a basic strum.
[G]
[Am] [C]
[D] [G] One, two, three, [Am] four, and one, two, three, [C] four, and one, two, three, [D] four.
So, that's one strum on the one [G] and two, one, two, another strum on the three, and then two [A] strums on the four end.
[G] So, one, two, three, four, and again, I'm doing downstroke, one, two, three, [A] downstroke on the one and two, [E] downstroke on the three, and then down, up.
So, it's like down, down, down, up.
[G]
Okay?
So, we've got that down, down, down, up.
And I just repeat [Am] on every chord.
[C] [D]
[Am] The picking pattern, I'm doing something like this.
[G]
[Am] [C]
[D]
So, [G] I'm strumming the chord, hitting the low note, and then hitting the top three notes.
Just that.
And [B] I'm strumming with, I'm hitting with [G] the pick, picking the low note, and then plucking [A] the highest string, the high E string with [G] my ring finger,
[F#] plucking the B string with [B] my middle finger, and then [C#] picking the G string [G] with my finger.
And the rhythm that I'm doing is, [A] I'm basically [G] strumming on the one, and then I'm hitting that lowest note of the [B] chord again on the and of the two.
One, two, and.
Okay?
And then I'm going three and four.
One and two, and three and four, [Am] one, two, three and [C] four, one and two, three and [D] four.
And what I'm [G] doing is, when I'm hitting that low note, I'm hitting the lowest note of the chord.
[Am]
So, now [A] keep in mind, this, on the G chord, this would be the [G] low E string.
On the A minor, [Am] we're hitting the A string.
[E] Hitting the A string again on [C] the C chord.
And then the [D] D, all the way up there on the D string.
So, [A] you can combine these two feels, the basic strum with the picking.
[G] [Am]
[C] [D] [G]
[Am]
[C] [D]
Okay?
[A] So, feel free to mix it up.
There's really no magic formula to coming up with a cool picking pattern that sounds good.
Just use your ears and try to, you know, [B] come up with something that matches whatever strum rhythm that you're doing.
There is a lot of specific picking patterns in the [D] Acoustic Mastery course.
So, [E] check that out.
It's a great course for, [Em] you know, all kinds of acoustic [A] stuff, especially picking patterns.
And there's a lot more good stuff in there.
[G]
But, [B] this should help you get going with picking patterns.
And we'll [A] catch you with another lesson
