[A] [G] [E]
[Em]
[E] Hey guys, how's it going?
Lee John Blackmore here at LeeJohnBlackmore.com.
This week we're going to have a look at Personal Jesus, actually written by Dipash Mode, played
by Johnny Cash.
We're just going to look at the main riff.
[Em] Let's get straight into it, OK?
This is based around a fifth [E] chord, which is an E power chord.
We do this a lot, probably one [C] of the most popular chords, that along with A minor in
[E] rock or blues.
[D]
And what we're going to do, normally if we play an E minor [Em] we play with our first and second finger.
But [A] we're going to just play one [E] finger and we're going to cover the A and the D string.
That's just a fifth chord, OK guys?
Alright, we're most commonly [F] known as a power chord.
We've talked about this [E] before.
[G] [E]
So this is our first thing here, I've got this first finger barred down over the A and
D string and I'm going to play the bottom E.
[G] [E] With my second finger then, I'm hitting
the third fret on the bottom E string and I'm doing a [G] bend, slide, [E] just kind of like
a [G] half bend [E] and then pull off.
Now what I see a lot of people doing is when they do this kind of thing they go straight
in on a bend.
So it sounds like you [Em] don't really want that.
You don't want to go [E] in with the bend.
You've got to play the note first, [G] [E] then bend, then pull off.
OK?
So after I've done that nice little pull off, bottom E, pull off, then I pluck in the D string.
Now, the D string I'm holding down with my first finger here in the second fret, OK?
So after I've [Em] plucked the D string [G] on the second [E] fret, then I do a quick three open
on the bottom E string again.
Three-oh.
And the whole riff starts again.
[Em]
[E]
Alright, so it takes a [Em] while to get the rhythm.
I'm going to play it slow for you so you can learn to play along.
Here we go.
Two, three, and.
[E]
[E] [G] [E]
[G] [E]
[G] [G] [E] [G]
[E] Then it moves up, OK?
[A] [E] Moves up to the A string.
So now instead of [G] covering the A and D string with our first finger, we're actually going
to cover the D and G string.
So we're no longer going to play this [C#] bottom E.
We're going to start on [A] the A string.
[C] [A] [C] [A] [Am]
[A]
[E] It's exactly the same, guys, except we start on the A string.
So it'll be open A.
We've got this first finger barring the D and G.
[A] Open A.
[C] [A] [G] At the third
fret, I'm playing with my second finger.
[C] Play, half [A] bend, pull off.
Then I'm playing the G string, which my finger's barring in the second fret.
[Am] [A] [C] [A] [Am]
[C] [A]
[Am] [A] [C] [Em] You know, sometimes it's hard to either pluck up on that [E] G string.
You might hit the other strings around it.
Don't worry.
[A] Sometimes it sounds pretty [Am] cool,
[A]
[E] OK?
So, you know, don't try and over-perfect it.
Just the groove is more important than anything.
So if you put those two together,
[Em]
change.
[Am]
[A] You just do it once there.
The G, [G]
down, up, down, up.
[E]
[G] What I'm doing there, I'm playing the F sharp on the drop, which is the second fret.
So G, down, up, down, up.
[E] Then I'm playing the B, and I'm actually covering [D] my thumb.
Using my thumb to cover that.
If you can't do that thumb on the second [G] fret, [D]
[E] you can do it [G] another way.
[D]
[G] I'm not changing my D here the easy way.
I'm just leaving my fingers in that G position.
[G] Just moving my first finger.
So as it's on the G, I don't know if you can see that, it starts on the second [F#] fret.
I'm just moving it over.
[F#] Sorry, it's back to the E string.
I'm moving [Em] this second finger.
[G] So G, down, up, down, up.
[C] Get rid of the second finger.
[E] Move the first finger to the [F#m] bottom E string.
[D]
And that's going to sound [Dm] good enough, alright?
[Em]
So, [A]
[G] [D] [E]
alright guys, so quick lesson this week.
Personal [Em] Juices by Depeche Mode, or in this case, this is the Johnny Cash version.
[F#] And [Em] just the main riff.
