Dream Guitars Lesson - Fun Sounds & Tricks Pt 1, Natural Reverb - Al Petteway chords
Start Jamming...
Hi, I'm Al Pettoway and I'm here at Dream Guitars.
Paul had asked me to do a lesson on some of the odd and weird and funny kinds of sounds
that I do when I'm playing guitar.
Things that may just fly right by during a concert.
These are fun little tricks, I guess, that you could use when you're playing.
It could be put into an arrangement, it could be just used as [B] an effect, all kinds of things.
One of the first things I wanted to show you is this fake reverb effect that I get.
A lot of my recordings I use very little reverb, if any.
What I like to do is use the guitar itself.
[G] I'm in dadgad tuning now, [A] so this is a good [D] tuning to show you this.
It's kind [E] of my standard tuning.
What I tend to do is want to play notes that are going to be picked up sympathetically
by the other strings.
If [D] I
[Ab] [Dm] stop that note, you hear there's a whole reverb going on.
[E] [A] [D]
[A]
[D] [D] [E]
[A] You can play on either [E] of the two plain strings for the most part, because the ones that have
the most overtones are the wound strings.
[A]
[D]
[A] [D]
I'm just making up something there for you to hear it, [Ab] but it's really a nice effect.
I used it on [E] one of my tunes called Chesapeake that goesit
starts like this.
[Gb] I actually hit these low [D] strings first.
[A]
[Am] [Dm]
[D]
[A]
The trick really is to just not touch these strings, just let them ring so that everything
you play is going to create [A]
that reverb.
That's kind of a [F] fun little effect that you can throw in, especially on a slow, pretty
tune and you're trying to do an arrangement.
