[A]
[G] [E]
[Ab] Hey there, I'm Al Pettiway and I'm here at Dream Guitars and I'm going to teach you a
little bit about that lick I just played.
I have like this whole arsenal of licks that are all based off of the same [Gm] notes, you know,
in different [Gb] tunings, different keys, but they're basically the same lick with different
kinds of ornaments.
So this one that I want to show you today is one that can be fit in at the end of a chord.
[E] We're in the key of E and if you're doing a straight chord progression like the one
[A] I just [F] did in the intro there, I [B] was playing a B7,
[A] A7, and then [G] I'd fit it in.
[E] So that ends [B] the phrase.
But I could just as easily be [E] playing E
[G]
[A]
[G] and A7.
[Bm]
[A] [G]
[E] I wouldn't put it in all those places, but I just wanted to show you [Ab] that it's the kind
of lick that can fit in to a 4-4 rhythm.
And where it comes is on the and of 4.
So it's like 1, 2, 3, [G] 4.
[E] [G] [E]
So that's the whole lick.
And I'll slow it way down [A] for you now.
[Bm] [Em]
[E] [Bbm] [G]
[E] [G] [E]
[A] [G] [E]
[A] When you get these hammer-ons and pull-offs [G] together,
[E] it makes it go much more fluid when
you're playing it really fast.
So you want to get the hammer-on, [Em] pull-off, [E] another pull-off.
[G] [D] [A]
[G] [E]
[Ebm] [G]
[E]
[G] [E]
It's a lot [Gm] harder to play these slow actually than it is fast.
So when you're learning them, it does help to kind of map it out for yourself and figure
out what you want to play.
But when I'm throwing in a lick in a tune, I'm grabbing from all these little ornaments
and hammer-ons and pull-offs and licks that I have in my head, and I can put it together
in any number of ways.
I could go
[A] [G] [E]
[Gb] It's almost exactly the same lick with slight different [G] turns in it.
You could do
[E] You could [G] play any kind of combination.
[Bm]
[A] [B]
[G] [E]
There you go.
