[Am] Hey friends, Joe here at Reverb.com checking out some riffs in the key of Mark Knopfler.
And in this lesson we're going to take a look at some of the solo licks in Once Upon a Time
in the West from the record Communique.
Beautiful Mark Knopfler goodness, clean, compressed fingerstyle soloing and some really cool chord
progressions underneath it.
So we're going to take a look at the chords, we're going to learn the licks and then we
are going to take a look at how these riffs relate to the chord progressions that lie beneath them.
Okay, the chords that lie underneath the solo are A minor, D, [D]
and G [G] major.
One, two, three, [Am] four, one,
[D] [Am] two, three, four, five, [G] six, one, six, [D]
[Am] one.
Okay so we're generally in the key of A minor.
It's going to start here on the 13th fret with a [D] full step bend and then right back down.
[Am] That's the [D] 12th fret up to 13.
G string, [A] 12th fret.
[N] And then back to G string, 12th fret, pulling off a quick little subtle pull off to nine.
[C]
[D] [E]
One, two, three, [D] four, [G] [E]
one, two, three, [F] four, rest.
[C] [E] [Am] Next lick is a total Knopfler signature move.
We're going to grab an A minor triad here, okay.
Root, third, fifth, 14, 13, and 12.
And we're going to kind of sweep that.
We're going to go starting with our thumb and then first finger and then second finger.
And then we're going to go up to 15 and bend up full step to the root.
[C]
[Am] Knopfler's vibrato when he bent or even when he's not bending is very [N] characteristic.
He had a way of getting to a note and then allowing the vibrato to kind of breathe into
it rather than starting the vibrato right away.
He had a way of looking at it like a vocal, like when you hear a great singer and they
hit a note and then the vibrato starts to just kind of breathe into it rather than being
right off the bat.
[Bb] [C]
[F] Coming back down on that [Em] [G] and landing on 12th fret here.
And that's going to be when the progression hits the G chord.
12th fret on the B string [E]
is a B, which is the third of the G chord.
So he's landing on a chord tone of [Am] the target chord.
[Em] [Dm] And then a little G major lick here.
[Bm] Up to the D and then [A] to the 14th of the G here and then [Bm] back up to the B.
[Am] [Bm]
Okay and now as the progression goes to [D] D, Knopfler gives us a beautiful little almost
country-esque type of riff here.
14th fret on the E, which is the F sharp, third of the D.
Knopfler's hitting those thirds,
bending up from C to D.
13, full step.
[Bm] [D] Three and four and from [F] 10 back to 13 on the B.
[Am] And then twice from the A to the G here.
10th fret on the B to 12th on the G.
And landing on the E, which is the fifth of A minor, which we resolve to.
One, two, three, [F] four.
[E]
[Am] [Bm]
[Am]
Okay, very cool.
Let's put the solo over the chord progression.
