Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be right with you.
Please welcome Diane Reeves, James Genus,
Zakir Hussain, Hushmu Shendenlerichi,
Bilal Karimi, and Terri Van Karen.
[C] Thank you.
It's a pleasure and an honor to be with you tonight
celebrating International Jazz Day.
But tonight I want to dedicate [Eb] this next song
to one of your native sons,
the great and legendary Arif Mardin.
I have the, I am so thankful
that I had the pleasure of working with him.
I know that he has been a producer
that has been sought after throughout,
from pop artists all over the world.
But he had a great love for jazz music early on,
producing such greats as the modern jazz quartet,
Sonny Stitt, and just many, many others.
He was also the first recipient in 1957
of the Quincy Jones Scholarship Award to go to Berkeley.
I love him.
We're bringing his spirit into the hall tonight.
This is for you, Arif.
