Derek Shulman talks about the possibility of a Gentle Giant reunion.
I'm Jon Bodden from RockHistoryMusic.com.
It's a really good time to be a Gentle Giant fan.
They released a handful of albums from 1970 to 1980.
At that point, they decided that maybe it wasn't fun anymore.
The band disbanded.
Most of the guys continued doing music.
Derek, however, was still in music, but on the other side as a record executive.
As a matter of fact, he signed Bon Jovi to their first contract.
There are a lot of prog bands who have gotten back together, back into the fold,
singing their old songs, getting back in shape, practicing on those instruments so they could pull it off.
But one band that hasn't done it was Gentle Giant.
They've been pretty firm since 1980 about no reunions.
Some of the members have gotten back together, like Rental Giant and Three Friends,
but a full-form reunion looks like it'll never happen, according to Derek Shulman.
Well, you just said exactly how I and Wippy feel, because it was a chapter that you write,
and when the chapter's finished and you say the end, that's what it is.
That's the end.
And if you try to recreate that, you start to become a parody of yourself, I think.
Or try to [Bb]

bring in the old fans who want to hear what you did in 1972 or 1975 and not go forward.
And the word progressive means to progress.
So we progressed personally as well, by the way, as well as being a band.
So in that respect, I guess we're still progressive.
I'm still working, Ray's still working, we're all doing different things.
So to go back and pretend that we – not pretend – to go back and say,
OK, let's go do this, yes, we could do it.
Sure, I guess we could.
But that would be for only two reasons.
Number one, because the fans would love it.
And in that respect, that's fine.
But it would be for a cash grab.
And one thing we never were, were cash grabber bands.
We did it for the music, primarily.
Thankfully, we were able to make a living at it and put bread on the table and et cetera.
But again, we didn't follow anyone.
Again, there was no sort of, let's be like so and so and so and so.
It was just something we had decided to be.
So getting back to your point, the idea of – especially now, I mean, we're all farce.
Who wants to see old farce on stage, you know, with a little more weight on us,
a little more arthritis in our fingers, pretending that we're 23 again?
We're not.
And again, being a self-parody, it would be awful, as far as I'm concerned.
The new remixed Gentle Giant album, which features songs from their first three albums,
has just been released, remixed by a man we know very well from Porcupine Tree, Stephen Wilson.
It's called Three Piece Suite, and it's available now.
We'll have more of our conversation with Derek Schulman [Ebm] coming up next week.
