DEF LEPPARD - The Hysteria Files with Phil Collen (6 of 6) chords

I [A]
[E] was [B] asked to join Def Leppard and I'd known Joe, all the guys actually, I was in a band
called Girl and we'd play the same venues in England.
I got a call midway through the
recording of Pyromania, all the songs were written, and Joe said, you want to come on
and play some solos, play some lead guitar on the album?
I said, yeah sure, I'll come
and help out and that's all I thought it was.
So something kind of happened, there was a
dynamic shift, I sung a certain way, they needed more vocals.
My ultimate sound, this
comes up a lot, it's whatever you're playing through really.
This sounds exactly like my
giant rig, I have a Marshall going through a Randall power amp that I've had since the
80s and it's going through two EVH cabinets, it sounds amazing.
But it still sounds exactly
like me, I think it really [D] comes down to the person playing it.
This is my lovely Jackson
PC-1, it's a hybrid super strat really.
These are Dimarzio's, I've got Dimarzio's on everything,
this is a Super 3, and then this is a Sustainer.
So it actually works as a pickup as well,
[Eb] like a flute.
Floyd Rose makes these, but it also works as a sustainer.
So when we're
doing this D'Era album, [Db] I'd use an Ebo, [F]
[D] [Db] [D]
but with this I
[Eb]
[C] [D] [Ab]
[Bb]
[Ebm]
[F] I [Ab] use brass picks now, these
are incredible.
Again, it's a slightly different sound, especially if you're shredding, you
can actually hear it hitting every note.
[Db] [Eb]
One of the great things about handling the success
with Def Leppard is that we've had a lot of really crappy things happen as well.
It was
a very humbling experience, as much as it was inspiring, it was very humbling.
I think we've
had that throughout our career, and you take any kind of success or any great thing with a pinch
of salt, as you do in life, you know, it's like, life isn't actually easy, it's pretty harsh.
And
it's a temporary thing, you know, success is temporary, you know, failure, also temporary,
you know, it depends on what you put into it.
And you know, me and Steve Clark used to be drinking
partners, and you know, at a certain point I kept blacking out, and I said to Steve, you know,
I can't do this, I've got to stop.
So I stopped, and he wasn't able to, and it ended up killing
him, so I'm glad I did, but yeah, it made a huge, huge difference, that's been 30 years now.
Actually, the same year as the album came out, I actually [B] said, yeah, I'm stopping this [A] stuff.
