She's the queen of reinvention but what [G] never changes is her [Em] incredible voice.
Debra Conway began her career as the frontwoman of pop band Do Re Mi in the
1980s, boasting top five hit Man Overboard.
[F]
[G] [G]
Her first solo album String of Pearls was best known for the [A] four-time ARIA
Award-nominated [E] song It's Only [B] the Beginning.
[Gbm] [A]
[E] [B]
[Gbm] Great [A] songs, now Debra is paying tribute to the star man [G] himself as part of the
[E] show David Bowie, Nothing [Ebm] Has Changed.
And Debra Conway [Db] joins us now live from
Melbourne.
Debra, [G] welcome to the show, it's wonderful [E] to be talking to you for
starters but you're performing Bowie's biggest hits with the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra.
[F] What is it about David Bowie that made him so special for you?
Well he has a lot of very good songs, he's a fantastic songwriter.
Without
actually being a dazzling lyricist, [Ab]
David [E] Bowie managed to cover an enormous
amount of territory and make it his own because he embedded himself as a
character so deeply in within those songs that they were very [Bb] believable and
[Eb] and the kind of [Gm] cryptic nature of the lyrics [Gb] matched in some way [F] the cryptic
nature of [Fm]
his [C] chameleon transformations.
[D] So it was a beautiful package, he was an
extraordinary
[Am] marketing guru as well.
[E] I mean he even in death and he's [D] been an
[Db] extraordinary [Ebm] leading light to follow I think.
[A] Do you remember the moment you
first [G] discovered Bowie?
[F] I think, no I don't remember exactly but I believe
Diamond Dogs was the first record [G] that I kind of got into.
I know that I went and
saw him at the Myer Music Bowl and I think it was around [C] 1978 or 79, have to
fact-check that one, but it was pouring [G] with rain I remember that and I [Ab] had my
young American style white pants on which were muddy up to the knees.
But it
was it was [G] an astonishing concert and he gave so much live.
It was, you know,
the recorded material, some people really deliver on record and some
people really [G] deliver live but there's not that many people who [E] can do both and
he did both very very well.
[D] Yeah, Deborah let's talk about the show that you're
doing.
You're also performing [Eb]
with [F] Aussie talents [G] like Tim Rogers, the Mighty
Timmy Rogers, Adelita, [D] Iota, Davey Lane, Steve Kilby.
Was it hard to decide
who got to sing which Bowie song?
I'm [F] not sure it was hard for me.
I told them what
I wanted [E] to sing and I got most of my requests so I was very happy.
That was
[Em] the [F] producer's job so [Fm]
I put in some [Db] a wish list and I was rewarded.
[Eb] You get to do Fame and Golden Years with Tim Rogers.
I do [C] and Ziggy [Gb] Stardust and Starman and
all you pretty [E] things, it's a wonderful.
[A] But he's [Dbm] got an incredible amount of
[Ab] fantastic songs so I don't [Db] think anyone is [Eb] disappointed Tom.
Yeah.
[Db] Jeans it must
be [Eb] a thrill for you to be singing [G] Bowie songs.
How do you think his music impacted
on your career professionally?
I [N] think that David Bowie was an extraordinary
interview subject and he was always able to answer exactly the questions that he
wanted no [G] matter what was being asked.
Hey Deb you have a new album out with
your husband, Willie Zeger, it's called Everybody's Begging.
Correct.
Do you think
your music is better after [D] 25 years and three daughters together?
I do, [Eb] absolutely
Tom.
There's no question in my mind that we're better.
We're improving with age
like good wine.
[G] We put out Everybody's Begging on the 2nd of September, we've
been touring up and down the East Coast, it's [A] sold out concert halls ever since
which has [G] been a real treat and we are going to be in Tasmania on the 1st of
[E] December at the Theatre Royal, on the 2nd of December we'll [A] be in Launceston at
the Earl Arts Centre [Am] and we hope people come along to that.
I'm hoping we're
going [Dm] to put some Perth dates in there as well so [A] heading [C] west.
But it has been
an absolute joy to play the new [E] album alongside of [C] the celebration of the 25th
[Ab] anniversary of String of [F] Pearls which of [G] course is this year.
So 25 years [F] together
but I heard a rumour when you first [Eb] asked him to tour with [G] you he knocked
you back?
He said no?
Correct he did.
What happened there?
Because he [G] had a gig.
[N] I was offering him nine
months work but he had a single show.
And then you altered your schedule right?
I'm intrigued I
thought.
I need to rethink my tour start date and call him back so I did.
Oh good and it's happily ever after.
I was rewarded, the superannuation is very low.
You were going to say rewarded with three beautiful daughters.
Are your daughters [Eb] following in your musical footsteps yet?
Well they're all very musical I have no idea whether they're actually going to
follow a career in that path.
The eldest one is just finishing off a music theatre course in
Ballarat but she's also been talking about possibly [E] applying for Biomed.
Maybe [G] we'll have a doctor in the family as well.
All singing all dancing.
Deborah we wish you all the very best with the show and we do believe that it is touring around the country.
You're going to Brisbane next and hopefully [F] to Adelaide and [D] Perth.
Unfortunately [N] I missed you in Sydney.
You know what Tom I can I can help you avoid that problem in the future because if you come and like
our Facebook page which is facebook.com forward slash Conway Zygier Z Y G I E R you'll never miss
out on a show again because we put them all up there.
There you go thank you very much.
Thanks Deborah.
