[Am]
[F] [Am] [G]
[F] [G] Hey everybody, [C] Norm over here and we're [F] doing a very special guitar of the day today.
[Am] This is a guitar that, [F] you know, it's kind of [Bm] a bittersweet kind of thing for us.
This is a guitar that is not for sale, [F#] but I thought it would be appropriate to show you.
In 1988, [N] David Crosby came into my store and he had his Gretsch Country Gentleman.
He had two of them.
One of them, though the binding was starting to come apart a bit, and he asked us about
replacing the binding on the guitar.
And I told him, you know, we could do it, but it would take a while and this, that,
and the other thing.
And while he was in, he saw a really nice couple of Martins that he liked.
And so I did a trade with him.
One was on a, this was him on that day in 88.
This was a Martin D1220.
And I was acquiring guitars, a lot of guitars, for the Hard Rock Cafe at the time.
And so I was trading people for stuff that they could use.
I traded him one Martin for this [F] D1220 that ended up in the Hard [D] Rock.
[F#] And I ended up getting his Country Gentleman.
As I say, he said he had two of them.
This one [A] was getting like the binding disease [D#] thing happening on him, [E] but that happens on,
you know, a lot of old Gretsch guitars.
This is a picture of him playing a Country Gentleman.
I'm not sure if this is the one that I have or the other [N] one that he said he had.
But he said he's had this guitar for a long time.
Again, this was in 1988 when we did the deal.
And I asked David to sign the guitar, which he did.
Let's take a look.
And here it is.
I mean, it's got a lot of corrosion, a lot of, you know, the binding is chipping away,
as I said.
But I didn't, I was going to fix it.
And then because I was such a big fan of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, and Ash,
I love group harmony.
It was just something I decided I was just going to keep it.
And I've got it.
I've had it since 1988.
[G] And again, you know, it's [Fm] bittersweet.
I'm really sorry to [F] hear about David passing.
And great guitarist, great vocalist, great harmony singer, and great songwriter.
And a lot of really great [F#] songs from Turn, Turn, Turn to Eight [F#m] Miles High, on and on,
and Byrds, and then, you know, Our [D] House, and For What It's Worth.
So influential.
And I think, did he not [D#] play the last Midnight Mission show?
He played a show that a lot of the proceeds went to the Midnight Mission.
It was put on by my friend Kevin and Lori.
So good.
And [Em] a lot of the proceeds went to the Midnight Mission.
It was [D#] at the Ace Theater downtown LA.
That was about two and a half, three years ago [C] or so.
And [E] I saw him and just said hi at the time.
Again, [B] this is something that's not for sale, [F] but it's just something we wanted to do just
as a kind of a tribute to David.
And Michael's going to play a little bit and just kind of show you what the [C] guitar does.
So I'm going to take it up front.
[F#] But also, it's not all sad news.
It's also [N] a really great day because it's also Norm's birthday.
Woo!
We couldn't forget that, Norm.
I'm only 100.
Happy birthday, Norm.
I don't look a day over 99.
No, no, we love you, Norm, and everything you do for the shop and for the guitar community.
Thank you.
It's no wonder why you were surrounded by beautiful people like David Crosby and they
trust you with these guitars and stuff.
So thank you, Norm.
Happy birthday, Norm.
Happy birthday.
I wish it was happier because of the David thing.
But we just wanted to do something just to kind of pay tribute to David.
And, you know, again, what a great musician, great singer, great songwriter.
So here it is.
Let's do it.
Michael, let's give it a shot.
See how it sounds.
Happy birthday, Norm.
All right.
Okay.
Are you going to play happy birthday?
I can't.
Out of all the things, Van Halen never did happy birthday.
I'm kidding.
Okay.
All right, let's see it up front.
All right, we're up front with a very special David Crosby's Country Gentleman Gretsch.
Beautiful guitar.
Norm got this in 88, I believe, as it's signed.
And we're also going through a really cool Paul Rivera amp that just came in.
We're going to be dealing with these.
So if you like the amp, reach out and we might be able to hook you up.
But really cool guitar as we covered in the back.
Very special.
So I'm going to do my best to do some of the birds and some of Crosby, Stills and Nash.
So here we go.
