Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters Talks about his love of The Descendents chords
Start Jamming...
Hey everybody, I'm Dave Grohl.
I sing and play guitar on the Foo Fighters.
I used to play drums.
When I first started playing drums, I didn't take lessons from anyone.
I just listened to Rupert's.
That's how I learned to play drums.
I didn't use a drum [D] set.
I set [B] up pillows on my bed and I sort of set them up.
I had a chair that I would put a pillow on, like a high hat, and I'd sort of sit on my knees
and put a pillow on the floor like a snare, [Bb] and then pillows on the bed like toms.
And I would listen to my favorite records.
And that's [C] how I learned how [D] to play the drums.
So, one of the first records that helped me learn how to play the drums was Milo Dosa College.
The Descendants.
Amazing records.
Bill Stevenson was an amazing drummer.
Then, [A] I got to see Black Flag with Bill Stevenson playing the drum a few times.
[D] I was blown away.
It was amazing.
Actually, I remember [Ab] I was in a hardcore band called Scream.
We played with them [D] in, [G] I think it was [A] Des Moines, or something like that.
And [Bb] he was like my hero.
He was like my drumming knight.
I had this 28-inch ride cymbal.
I had the hugest ride cymbal I've ever [A] seen in my life.
The bell was like this big.
But it was a 28-inch ride that I bought at some music store near my house [D] in Virginia.
And we were playing with all.
And I remember thinking, oh [C] my god, Bill [B] Stevenson, Bill Stevenson's going to [Bb] be here.
He's my hero.
And we were sound checking.
[G] And I saw him walking around.
Holy shit, there's fucking Bill [D] Stevenson.
And after sound check, I was avoiding him because [Bb] I was scared of him.
And he was my hero.
And I saw him [C] walk up on stage and look at my ride [D] cymbal.
And he went
And I shook his head and walked away.
And that was it.
But [N] my biggest tribute to Mr.
Bill Stevenson has to be on the Queens of the Stone Age record, there's a song called Song for the Dead.
[A]
And the riff is [C] a lot like Slip It In.
And I was a huge Black Flag fan.
And [Eb] so were the other guys in Queens of the Stone Age.
And as we were writing that song in the studio,
Josh played the riff.
And we were going
So as we were jamming on it and fucking around with it, as a joke, I did [Bb] the Slip It In.
And they knew exactly what I was doing.
And when we went to record it, they were like, dude, do that.
Do the Slip It In thing.
I'm like, oh no, I can't do that.
There's no way.
[Eb] And they said, do it, you should do it.
[B] So I did it as an homage [Eb] to Mr.
Bill Stevenson.
And then I got to meet him and I was afraid he was going to beat me up.
But he didn't, because he was pretty [C] cool.
But beyond [D] any of that crap, I'll show you one last thing.
This is from when I [Bb] was 12 years old.
I tried to [A] give myself a Black Flag tattoo when I was 12 and I never finished because it [Ab] hurt too bad.
And so [A] that was in 1982, I think.
Or 83.
So Bill, [D] hats off to you.
You've changed my life and I wouldn't be a drummer if it weren't for you.
So, cheers.
