One of the things I sort of developed quite early on was a sort of a hybrid picking [Ab] thing.
I never [G] was very comfortable with a thumb pick.
[Eb]
[Gb] They were [E] always too tight and my [D] thumb always turned blue, so I thought, no, I'm not really going to use one of them.
[Db] So I decided to stick [Ab] with the pick [Gm] and develop these two fingers to try and [Eb] get something going that sounded a bit sort of Scotty Moore.
I was very, [D] very into Scotty Moore when I first started playing.
[Ab] And [A]
[Eb] it's not, I think it's easier than a thumb pick, but [A] it's not, obviously if you want to play [F] like Chet Atkin, it's probably [D] the best thing to do is stick with a thumb pick.
But here's the [E] way I do it.
We just do something in E.

[B] [A]

And really what you're doing, what you're trying to do is keep the [Am] bottom strings going, [E] the E and the D string.
And with the middle finger, you're just picking up [Gbm] on the [E] top strings, just playing [Gb] sevenths and [D] sixths.
[E]
I always kind [G] of look at it as kind of a box.
These two [F] frets here, [G] if you're playing on an E, [F] the third and the second fret.
So I [Fm] always look at those two strings, the E and [G] the B, as just a box.
And just keep your little finger within those and it'll always [Abm] work.
You'll always come up with [Em] something that sounds good.
[E] [A] [E]
[Em]
[E] It's always [F] nice to put that little roll in on the [E] index finger there.
