[D] To discover [B] the importance our childhood [G] plays in our lives as adults, we have already met
a songwriter and a sculptor.
Now [N] let's meet a singing sensation.
Daniel O'Donnell continues
to enjoy an immensely successful career, having sold over 10 million records worldwide.
But
he doesn't take for granted the [Db] fame and fortune he enjoys today [Gbm] without thinking back to his
[A] childhood in a close-knit community [Ab] in County Donegal.
[A]
[Db] Growing up here, you know, in this area, I suppose, being such a rural area, it meant that everybody knew everybody.
There was no door [Bm] closed to anyone.
And as a child that was a wonderful, I [Db] suppose, experience
from my point of view, to be able to go from house to house.
[Dbm] Everybody had a welcome.
The
[Ab] children, whatever was here, we all just played together.
We hadn't all the things that cities
would have like playgrounds, but we had endless freedom.
[Ab] I mean, this is just, [Gb] I suppose,
for me, [B] heaven.
The memories of coming to this beach as a child, and of course Owey
Island, where my mother came from.
I can see the house that [Gbm] we spent our holidays in, and
the school that you can see [A] there, minus the roof now.
But we used [Dbm] to go to that school
and dance.
It's an [Dm] amazing memory.
I remember sitting on the steps [Ab] on a lovely summer's
evening.
[N]
Community wasn't always big gatherings of people.
It was small gatherings of people
that created wonderful memories.
And I suppose that sense of somebody to rely on was very
[Ab] important.
I always feel very privileged [Gbm] to have grown up in a place like this.
And I
think it was the people that made it, apart from the beautiful scenery that we have.
But
I think it's the people that's [Abm] the most important.
[Gb] As a child, when we went to the chapel, it
seemed like you were there for every occasion.
I mean, there was October devotions, and there
was throwing out the petals on May Day, and confirmation,
[G] communions, first confessions.
[Dm] You went for everything.
[G] My first singing was done in the [Dm] chapel.
I was never on the
altar.
I was always [D] in the choir, and I sang in the choir all the time.
And even now, [G] whenever
I'm at home, I would go in and sing in the choir.
I [D] suppose that's what gave me the love
of that [Dm] type of music.
[G] The [D] fact of [G] the chapel being such a focal point, everybody went.
Then when I started singing, to meet people was like just an extension of all [G] of that.
[Bm] And still, to this day, [B] it's the same.
[Dm] [G] I think for [D] me, growing up [Bm] as a part of the Catholic
community, that has stayed with me.
[D] I mean, I would [G] still go to Mass [B] every Sunday, no
matter [D] where I am in the world.
[B] It's something that is important to me.
It's not something
that I [F] preach about.
But for me, it's the right thing to do.
Even though the world moved
on financially, and people were better educated, the sense of community, I think, is [Eb] still here.
[Ab] [Gm]
[Eb]
[Ab] I, the Lord [Db] of sea [Ab] and sky, I have [Fm]
[Eb] heard my people cry.
[C] All who dwell [Db] in dark and sin,
[Bbm] my hand [Eb] will save.
[Ab] I who [Db] made the stars [Ab] of night, I will make their [Eb] darkness [Ab] bright.
Who will [Db] bear my light to them?
[Bbm] Whom shall [Ab] I [Eb]
send?
Here [Ab] I am.
Is [F] it I?
[Fm]
I [Ab] have heard you calling in [Bbm] the
[Eb] night.
I [Ab] will go if [Fm] you lead me.
I will hold your [Db] people in.
[Ab]
I, [Cm] the Lord,
[Db] [Ab]
I [Fm] have borne [Eb] my [Eb] people's pain.
[C] I [Fm] have wept [Db] for love.
[Bbm] They turn [Eb] away.
[Ab] I will break
[Db] their hearts of [Ab] stone.
[Fm] Give them [Eb] hearts for you
[Ab] will speak [Db] my [Db] word to them.
[Bbm] Whom shall [Eb] I send?
Here [Ab] I am.
Is [Fm] it I?
