if we would go to Washington, D.C. with him and sing a song at the wall, a song that he
wrote along with what general's name that you wrote this for?
John Riley.
John Riley, yeah.
And he's from Virginia too.
I think he was a school teacher.
But they wrote this song and Jenny asked if we would come.
[D] Actually, where'd Bob and them go?
We're not going to do the full band with it?
[F] Yeah.
Hey guys, come on [A#] back out here.
You can eat Taco [Dm] Bell here after a while.
[E] Yeah, let's use [N] the band on this.
[E] But Jenny asked us to go to Washington, D.C. and sing this with him.
And I have got to tell you, and [N] Jenny can talk more about this song, but this was one
of the most touching moments of our career.
Pardon me.
Because we're very patriotic, as you can tell, red and white, blue and white, and when we
go across the sea, red and white blue goes with us.
And as we stood on the stage with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we've got around one microphone,
we sang this song.
And a [Gm] lot of veterans and their families were out in front of us, the wall was [Bm] behind us,
and as we were singing, the president on the ring [N] one flew over and sat down at the White House.
It was the most surreal American moment I had ever [G] had.
[E] And it was such a touching moment.
And what year [Em] did you guys write this song?
I think it was, I know it was a hit in 1988, I think we were around somewhere in 1988.
It's a great song.
But one of the things that makes me about this song, [G] it's probably my favorite song
to do because I get to say thank you to the veterans.
How [Am] many veterans do we have at the House of Fame? We [D] have.
When you [C#] first stand up and you get to take a picture, you're [N] sitting there and you have
to, oh, all these men out there, thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts, I
[G#] I talk about this song every night in my shows and everything [E] that I do, and like I said,
I get to say thank you.
But one of the things that really gets me, I hear [N] stories about people that, men and
women that have gone and fought for us, and the ones that really get to me are the ones
that come up after a show, and the tears are just coming down their face, and they cannot
get a word out.
I mean, literally can't get a word out.
And that just really, it just, it just touches my heart.
You just can't imagine how much it touches my heart.
The fact that I realized that I never had to fight in a war.
[Gm] I never, [N] and on that it took my brothers, one was in the Army, one was in the Navy,
I had nine kids.
They all came home safe.
God, you know, took care of them.
And I, I just can't get over how God has blessed me and blessed this country, and that I get
to stand on this stage, and on this stage, and do what I do, and love it, because people
[Dm] like you, those who get to know you, thanks for making this country a great, [Am] great country on earth.
And you [C#] still make something [E] of it.
So you're [G] good, Paul, and thank you so much.
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
I [D] saw her promise, [G]
she walked up [D] to the wall.
[G] [D]
In her hands she held some love, [G]
as her tears began [E] to [A] fall.
[Em] [D] And she stood there, thinking, [G]
[D] as she [G] raised her [D] head, that she [Em] looked up to heaven, [D] [A] and
the words she [D] said were these.
[G] She said, Lord, my heart is full of your love [D] for me.
[G] And though I love to see him, just one more [A] time you see.
[G] All I ask is for the moment [D] to return, [A]
[Bm] [B] [G] so the Lord could exalt [A] his holy name [D] on all
[G]
[D] the earth.
[C] [D] She
[Am] [D] said he lived next to a family, [G] he hoped on Christmas [D] Day, and he died for God's cause
[G] in a place so [A] far away.
[Em] [D] I remember girls and little boys [G] playing wars when [D] she was three.
[Em] But Lord, this time I know [A] He's not coming [D] home to me.
[G]
[D] She [G] said, Lord, my Lord was special, and He meant so [D] much to me.
[G] And oh, I'd love to see Him, but I know I just [A] can't be.
[D]
[A] So [G] I thank You for my memories, and the moments to [D] [A] come.
[Bm] [D] [G] But Lord, You did tell me [A] that He's more than a name [D]
