[F] This is, of [Ab] course, Cowgirl in the Sand by Neil Young, a song that [Fm] he's recorded in lots
of different [Abm] incarnations and versions with variations and things.
Well, I've finally put together a lesson on this that is up at Totally [B] Guitars right now
as part of the Target program.
And in this one, we kind of [Ab] concentrate on the [Db] typical acoustic [Ab] versions that he played
[B] on, well, not so much like on [Bb] this, which was a typical electric [Ab] version, but more the
way it was done on 4 [Abm]-Way Street.
So this is where we first [Ab] kind of heard this [Abm] pounding, this [E] acoustic [Ab] drum, [D] using his guitar
as a drum to [Bbm] sort of [D] get [Bb] great percussive sound.
And [Fm] so what we do in this lesson [Db] is we [A] work on just being able to muffle that bass note
with a palm mute.
And so the [Abm] technique there is very important.
What you do is you try to get the base of your hand very close to your wrist, [B] landing
on the saddle [Ab] [A] exactly at the same time that you're hitting the bass note.
And the top part of your fingers could even be hitting the guitar at the same time, adding
to the [E] percussive effect.
So this lesson goes into great detail about that.
The chords, of course, that he plays over the opening are A minor and [Bb] F.
And he plays
his F with his thumb on the sixth string, which allows him to [G] do a hammer-on [B] on the
third [Db] string from open G to [Fm] A.
And that's an [F] important part of the sound, too.
Sometimes he [Bb] plays the F major [F] 7, leaving the first string open.
But we go [Bb] into that all the way [A] in the lesson in great detail.
Then talk about all the little runs [C] and [F] [C]
[Em] [G]
[Am] all the [Ab] little fancy stuff that happens in there.
So if you'd like to check out the lesson, it is up now at [Bbm] Totally Guitars.
We also [Abm] even go into, well, not so much this, not so much [Ab] the version from I'm Happy Y'all
Came Down, which is just like the one on [B] Four Way Street, [Ab] but the way another band did it,
Clark, McGuinn, [Db] Crosby, Clark, and Hillman.
[Bbm]
The Byrds in 1973 [E] put out a little country version of it.
Playing in the key of E.
[Dbm]
Sounded a [Ab] little bit more like that.
So as I was putting this lesson together, I thought, you know what, the heck, I gotta
just talk about Crosby and Clark's, Crosby and [Bb] McGuinn's version, which of course included Gene Clark.
But so that lesson is [Eb] up now at Totally Guitars.
There are [B] also a lot of free lessons there.
This [Ab] one is part of the Target program, but I encourage you to check out [Abm] the free ones
if you want to get a feel for what we, for the way lessons work there and [Ebm] the way I put them together.
But [Bb] if you'd like to see the lesson on Cowgirl in the Sand, [Gb] it is up now at Totally Guitars.
