Well, aw shucks y'all, we're here for a review of that new Owl City track, and I hope y'all are gonna be tuned in because
this one's gonna be real good y'all.
[E] [B] [C#]
What's up everyone, [A] John from Beyond Hair TV.
It is with no real pleasure that I bring you a review like this, but uh, what did I just listen to?
I, like many others, was kind of excited whenever Adam Young announced that he was gonna be returning to Owl [G] City
after doing a lot of cinematic scores, [A#m] and that makes sense because now his [A] new album for Owl City is [G] called
[F#] Cinematic.
And the first thing that I didn't understand is the fact that this is gonna be released in June of next year.
And he's announcing it at the end of October, early November 2017.
That is like seven, eight months away?
I can't count it on my hands too easily, but it's a ways away, so why are you announcing this now?
I thought Owl City's last project, Mobile Orchestra, was bad.
I mean, The Verge?
Come on.
I mean, come on.
How much more pandery can you get with a song for graduation that was released right around whenever people would
graduate?
And there's literally caps and gowns on the album art for that single.
It was just pathetic, in my opinion.
I saw an artist that I once loved turning into something of a corporate shell, or else just a shell of his former self.
I'm not saying everything has to be oceanized, everything has to be Midsummer Station, or even the EP sound of June.
I know that that's not going to happen, at least I don't think it will ever happen, but at least make something creative.
And I didn't think that it could get worse than Mobile Orchestra, but here we are.
This new song, All My Friends.
I kid you not, the first time I hit play on this song, I thought it was a joke.
Like, I thought Adam was trolling us.
I thought that it was just a [N] placeholder in place of like an actual first song.
But no, this is it.
I looked down to the length of the video, 3 minutes 25 seconds.
Oh, it's actually the legitimate song.
And then after that, I started laughing because, what?
All My Friends is already one of the worst songs that I have heard all year long.
It's the worst Owl City song to date, and it's a track that just blends and tries to force blend like country,
like campfire acoustics, and like a sense of like sentimentalism, and the result is just this clusterfuck of awful.
Imagine being friends with a space alien, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and a politician, and then you get them all together in the same room,
and then you wonder why it doesn't work out.
That's All My Friends in a nutshell.
I never thought I'd say this, but I would take Back Home featuring J.Cohen. from Mobile Orchestra over this, because this, this is just abomination bad. It's so bad. It's like one of those tracks that you listen to, and you cannot stop slapping yourself because you're like, is this real? Is this real? Wake up, John! For something like this, you're not just gonna have to take my word for it. We're gonna sit down, and we're gonna listen to some snippets of this song, and talk about exactly why they do not work, and why [G] they are awful. It's [D] been this. [G] It's [A] like they're always trying to tear us apart. Right away, Adam just breaks down the gate by giving us this really, really cheesy country riff that's starting to loop [C#] and build. It already sounds like you're sitting around a campfire in sixth grade about to share ghost stories, and then [Gm] he comes in and starts rapping? No, he's [G] [N] not. These extremely forced references to the South and the way of living here is so forced, because Adam Young is not a Southerner, so I don't know where all of this faux Southern accent and shucks and y'all and everything like this is coming from, because it's embarrassingly bad for him. And if he was from the South, maybe that would be one thing, but he's not. He's literally from about as far north in the U.S. [Dm] as you can get. [A] [D] [G]
This chorus is one of the most underwritten, underdeveloped [D#] songs that I have ever heard, and I respected Adam in the past just because he could write a smart hook, or he could write something different and unique. And here, it sounds like the UHHHHHHHHHH It's either a Home Improvement reference, or about they're about to summon a [D] demon out of a campfire. [C] [G] [D] [G] [A] [F#] The backing vocals are killing me! They're just like, word-for-word matching in the background. It sounds like a group of people just like, talking and saying everything that he's saying. It's like they're in on some inside joke. And I can say these things because I went to Christian church camp back in the day. That's exactly what this reminds me of It's like everybody already knows [D#] the songs and they're like, ah It's funny because like we're doing it and everybody's joining in on the song and singing the backing vocals And it's a good old campfire song, but would I ever put those campfire songs to tape? Nah Nah [D] [G] [Em] Wow, what a fascinating ending [G#m] to this song that I didn't see coming from a [N] mile away If you're still a kid and you go to camp, I guarantee this is going to be on your counselor's playlist next year You know, you're just going to have that sentimental reflection moment at the end where everybody's saying their goodbyes everybody It's the last night and you know, we're always going to have this sixth grade week of camp We're going to remember for the rest of our lives It's almost like this should be in wet hot american summer because it's a joke of itself. It's a joke of itself Yes, this is a harsh review. But yes, this is a horrible song. I don't understand I know that there's still an album to come it could be okay. It could be fine It could be great. Even this could be like the one song. I haven't heard cinematic Neither of you we can't comment on the album, but i'm commenting on this song and i'm saying Nope two thumbs down. This is just I don't understand how it got made how it got released or how it got released as the first Taste of cinematic. I don't understand who would pre-order this after hearing this. These are my thoughts guys. What do you think? Please let me know in the comment section down below. This was all just my opinion today, but damn, this is Damn hit that like button on the review because i'm sure there's a lot of owl city fans That are just automatically gonna downvote this because you know opinions and that sort of thing Ah, it's hard not to be let down by this. It's hard not to laugh at this I'm gonna give the song a [G] very light one out of five, maybe even a point five out of five I don't ever want to hear this again That's how bad this is to me and it reminds me of camp and my youth in the worst ways It's like your dad [A] and uncle sitting around the campfire trying to sing you a song and they're like It's funny and they keep elbowing you and you're like get me out of here Thanks for watching Don't forget to subscribe to the channel if you're new friends and all that friends go and subscribe if you're able to support on Patreon the annotations in the corner of the screen right there are all top link down below another owl city review that I might Have liked a little bit more right over here and uh another video right over here Socials in the description and i'll see you soon on beyond ar
