Hey, this is Craig from Guitar Lava, and today I wanted to introduce you to Robin Ford, in
case you've never heard of him, and you're in for a treat.
This guy plays the minor pentatonic, and he really sticks to it.
He likes to play not shredding.
I think he shreds, it's just not fast.
It's very tasteful, and he likes the slowness of it so that it creates space, and he can
just go from note to note.
One of the things he does is, instead of playing the minor pentatonic, one of the things he
says is like, people bash the minor pentatonic all the time, but he loves to stick to it,
and he does really incredible things with it.
So, one of the things he does is, the minor pentatonic, penta means five, so that's five
notes in the scale, and we're going to [F] concentrate on A minor pentatonic.
[A] So that's just [C] five, eight, [E] five, seven, [D] [A] five, seven.
You're going [D] up from the low E string.
One of the things he'll do is, he'll add a major six.
[A] So instead of playing the flat seventh, he'll play the major six.
[Am]
[D] [A]
[A]
[F#] And that's one of the things.
Another thing, he'll bend notes with his first finger a lot.
So like in the lick, which I'm going to get to in a second, he started on that major six,
and he's [G] bending it up to the flat seventh, which is basically to that G string, I mean
to the G note on the B [E] string.
A [A] lot
[C]
[A] of times, he's done this in the past where he'll [D] do that.
[C]
[F#] [A]
[F#]
So what you can do is, use the minor pentatonic, and occasionally throw [F#] in the major six.
[A] [Am]
[A]
[D]
[Am] [D]
[F#m] [A]
[C] [A]
[F#] So let's get into the lick.
The lick starts on that major six on the seventh fret of the B string.
So you're going to grab that note.
I'm not using [A] a pick, because I [E] kind of like how, [D]
I kind of like that, just the chicken
picking part of it without a pick for this lick.
So it starts on the seventh fret, so you're going to bend up on the seventh fret.
This kind of creates tension, [E] and then you'll play the fifth fret on the E string.
So then
[G#] you're going to slide up to the [Am]
same note, the A note, on [F#m] the B string.
[E]
And then you'll play the eighth fret of [G] the E string, and bend it up with your pinky,
[A#] [E] I mean your first finger.
[G#] That's the first phrase.
The second phrase, you're going to start on the seventh fret again of the B string, and
you're going to [E] play it like this.
[C]
[G] So, bend it up a little bit and come back [E]
down to the A, sorry, down to the E.
Start it [F#m] up on the seventh fret, [E] and release it to the E on the fifth fret.
[F#m] [D] And then a ghost note is the seventh fret on the G [E] string.
[C]
[D] [C]
[G] It's just kind of a passing note, I mean you can play the note, but it's just kind of a passing note.
[E]
[C] [D]
[E] [F]
[C] [C]
[E] [C]
[G#] [C] [A]
[E] [C]
So let's start, do the [F#] whole thing from there.
[A] [E]
[C] [C#] [E]
[Am] [D] [C] [A]
And all that [D] is, is seven on the G [Am] string, pull off to [A] fifth fret, seven on the D string,
[G] pull off to fifth fret, [E]
seven on the A [D] string, pull off to fifth [C] fret.
Slide down to the C and pull it down.
[C#] [A]
And all that is, is, [C]
[C#] pull that up and
[A] off, [Am] and you've got the fourth and fifth on the
D and G string, and then you just slide it up to [G] the [A]
G and the C sharp.
Five and six.
And that's the same thing playing an A7 chord.
[E] [C]
[A]
And that's it, that's Robin Ford, that's an introduction to Robin Ford.
He, you really gotta check out some of his stuff, he's been around for a long time, very
tasteful licks, and his tone is amazing.
Anyway, I'm Craig, thanks for subscribing, thanks for your support, and I'll catch you next time.
