I want to share with you some songs that come from that [Bm] period of time.
As much as we love the music [Em] that's been handed down to [C] us,
and certainly [G] as our island home changes and changes and [D] changes with the passing of time,
[Bm] we cling tenaciously to those songs and [D] those stories because they remind us who we are as a people
[C] and our connection to the land no matter what happens on the [Cm] face of it.
And [G] I'm sure that when Hawaiians move far away from home,
those [D] are the songs that connect them back to their roots.
But I want to [Bm] send this song out to all of you listening, especially [D] on the internet this evening.
It's a song that I wrote at a very lovely [Cm] place called Kalaupapa on the [G] island of Moloka'i.
It's a peninsula that juts out into the ocean at the base of those beautiful cliffs.
It was 1976, they were talking about making Kalaupapa a national park,
and the folks who had resided there had been sent there with Hansen's disease,
shut away from the world, and they weren't really sure that they wanted the rest of the world to come [D] visiting.
And [Bm] in typical Moloka'i style, the people [D] in the community said we need to sit down,
interact with each other, and talk story about this.
So they invited us to come along.
[Bm] We walked down those cliffs [D] along that trail.
Anybody here walk down [G] the cliffs of Moloka'i to Kalaupapa?
Anybody besides me?
One, two?
[C] Yes.
By the time you get to the bottom, your legs are like shaking.
And really the hardest part is making sure that you watch the trail,
because the mules go [Eb] down there as well, so it can get really [G] slippery.
That evening, we spent the whole weekend down there talking story,
and hanging out with the kupuna from topside Moloka'i.
[Bm] Auntie Clara Kuh, who has [D] long since passed, was a woman of great fortitude.
And she said, if you [G] kids want to experience Kalaupapa like [E] we did when we were young,
you go outside and sleep.
So they took the house and we ended up [Cm] outside in the big [G] field under the Kamani trees.
[D] And when the lights go out in the houses,
[G] you're really left with just that [D] panorama of storms overhead,
because there's no electric lights, there's no street lights, there's nothing.
And [D] the peninsula, of course, is surrounded on three sides by water,
so the presence of the ocean is so very near.
And there's a sound that the wind makes when it blows along the cliffs of Moloka'i.
It almost sounds as if somebody is up there in the [Am] cliff calling down to you.
[D] And with the land so [Bm] very present, and with [D] the intentions that we went down,
we thought, well, it must be the land itself reminding [G] us
to come back to the spirit that is Hawaii.
So that [Am] night, under the [D] Kamani trees, this song [Bm] was born.
My
[E] [E] dream was [D] filled with the sound of the [G] [Em] ocean.
Hawaii [D] is [G] calling.
[A] [D] Come to [G] me gently.
[D] Rest [Am] here [D] beside me [G] for a [D] while.
[C]
Stare [Gm] in the air.
[G]
Can you feel it?
[D] Hawaii is
[G] calling.
[D] Come to [G] me gently.
[Am] The wind [D] whispers [G] in the [A] trees.
[C] It sits there in the [G] sound of the rain.
[A] Hawaii is [D]
[G] calling.
[D] Come to [G] me gently.
[Am] [Dm] [D] Outside of [G] me.
[D]
Come to [G] me gently.
[Am] Hawaii [D] is
[G] calling.
[D] Come to me gently.
[Am] [D] Outside [G] of [D] me.
