Colin Hay reconnects with regional Australian audiences - ABC chords
Start Jamming...
What's in it for me?
I get a lot out of doing [D] shows, wherever they are.
I travel a lot of different parts of the world, not just major centres.
I do a lot of work in North America and going over to do some stuff in Europe next year,
but I've been [A] working a lot for the last two decades.
I did some touring earlier in the year in regional Victoria and, you know,
there's some nice places to play these days.
I haven't really lived [G] in Australia all the time.
I've lived in California for most of the last couple of decades.
Sometimes I see people that I haven't seen for a long time, so that's a pretty nice experience.
You know, when I'm here it feels like I'm coming home.
I mean, I'm lucky, you know.
I mean, when I go to [D] Scotland it feels like I'm going home
and when I go back to California it feels like I'm going home.
So I have a lot of different homes.
I'm very lucky.
There are people who come along because of Men at Work, clearly,
but that seems to be, I wouldn't say diminishing,
but what I've found is that people who are older, they don't go out that much anymore.
So, you know, it's hard to get people who are 40 plus to go out in the first place.
And not only that, but because it's not called Men at Work,
because it's not Men at Work, it's not the old band, it's a solo thing,
there's even less of a connection with, say, older people
because they tend to be more brand-oriented.
You know, like if the Eagles come through, there's people who will go and see the Eagles
and there'll be thousands, but there'll be people who grew up with that music.
So I was lucky to pick up a younger audience through, like you say,
through film and television, scrubs and so forth.
So the audiences tend to be younger over the last, say, seven or eight years.
It's not something that I really bother thinking about.
I've always felt like who I am, even in the old band,
I had a strong sense of self, if you like.
So I've never stopped playing those songs and I just continue writing songs
and it's not really something that
I mean, it's a long time ago as well,
it's 30 years ago, so it's not
I've been on my own for 25, 26 years,
and [G] so that's a long time.
I drink [D] good coffee every morning
[G] [D] Comes from a place that's far away
When I'm done, I [Em] feel like talking
[E]
[D] Without you here, there is less to say
[G] I don't [D] want you thinking I'm happy
What [A] is closer to you
[D] [G]
[D] That if I lived till I was [Bm]
[D] 102
Just down the [D] street
[A] I'll never get old
[D]
[G] [D] I'm no longer moved to drink strong whiskey
[G]
[D] And I shook the hand of time
And I knew that if I lived till I could no
No [Bm] longer climb [D] my stairs
I just [G] don't think I'll ever get old
[Em]
[Bm] [D] Hey
[A] Your
[D] [G] face, [D] it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter, [D] it's still ringing in [A] my
[G] I still find [D]
pieces of [Em] your [E] presence
Even, [G] even
[D] after all
[G]
But I don't [D] want you thinking that I don't get asked to dinner
Because [G] I'm here to say [D]
that I sometimes
[G] [D] Even though I may soon feel a [Bm] touch [D] of love
I just [G] don't think I'll ever [A] get [D] old
[G] Yeah, if [D] I lived till I was 102
Just [G] don't think [D] I'll ever get old
[F#]
