[F] [C] Hey friends, welcome back.
[Bb] Here's our exclusive inside look at [Ab] the [Eb] 2018 album
Cody [Bb] Canada and the [Fm] Departed.
They appropriately named three.
Now the band's
[F] three-piece, the album [Bb] features, you guessed it, three different versions of
the cover [Fm] artwork.
Here's our sit-down [Bb] conversation about the project.
The band's
frontman, Cody Canada.
Take it away.
[Fm] [Eb] [Bb]
[Fm] [C]
[Bb]
[Fm]
I've had the idea for this, these songs for [G] eight [Fm] years.
They kind of come and go
in and out.
One I didn't think was gonna make it, it's the first [Bb] track.
But really I
just didn't know where the band [Ab] was headed because I had members coming and
going and I didn't [Ebm] want to [Eb]
commit to a record.
[Abm] Then when I committed to the
record, I realized I had about 12 [Db] songs.
So we added [Abm] 11 or 12 originals and like
[Eb] Myrtle's song, [Ab] Two-Tone Skinner.
[Db] The devil's only gonna [Ab] dust my soul with a cup of holy [Eb] water.
I try to [E] warn her, won't you come around the corner, [Gb] it'll be much too [Ab] late to turn.
[Db]
Well, you know, [Ab] for the last Ragweed record, unfortunately it wasn't as happy as we
wanted it to be and everybody went their separate directions.
And I [Abm] didn't talk to
Mike for [Ab] four years.
Then it [Db] was heartbreaking and Skinner would call me [G] and say,
we need to get back together and we did.
And I think a lot of it was Tom.
And we jumped right back in the saddle and I said I've done two records, really three
[C] records [G] as the producer and I don't know what I'm doing.
It really felt like
it did with Garage.
You know, we walked in with just a few [C] songs and then [G] throw
ideas out and tell the band to take a lunch break or nap or whatever and we
let us write.
Well, it's hard to keep the windows up [C] when the radio's burning [G] it down.
I was thinking about pressing my luck, [C] but it all came [G] back around.
You know, it seems [D] charming.
[C] You've been feeling that [Gm] way too, now we [D] all agree
that [C] it's all just [G] coming undone.
Lipstick was one day [C] I was in Corpse [G] Christy, something came on TV.
I don't know, it's just little things that just kind of happen.
I think it's
the [Bm] same with anybody that's [G] writing a song or a book or [D] whatever.
But there was a
[A] girl, a lady of the night getting ready [Bm] and putting [Gbm] lipstick on and [G] I told the
guys, I bet that she'll be telling lies for the lipstick guys.
That's what the
whole song [A] started with.
And then I got the first couple of lines and I took it
[D] to Mike and that was all over.
I mean, he fell in love [E] with it, which is really
[D] good.
It's a good thing I wrote with Mike.
If he likes a song, [E] then you have to
like say, [D] wait, [G]
make sure [D] you use my line because he'll try to push you [A] out of it.
All in good [D] fun, you know.
But I went into the studio as soon as it was done.
We were outside in the front, finished the song, walked [Bm] in and probably two takes.
[G] Under the [D] sheets, [A] the queen of the [Bm] streets,
[G] Wipe [A] that lipstick [D]
off and here [Bm] we go.
[G] Over [D] and over [A] again.
My kids [Bm] have recently got into
[G] playing instruments instead of [D] just listening to
music and taking over our phones.
[E]
[B] So they got into Green Day, [G] saw Green [E] Day
[D] and Austin and wanted me to write a punk song.
And they said, [Dm] you don't know how
to write a punk [E] song.
I've done a [B] couple, I could probably do another.
[D] So [Dbm] I wrote
this tune [D] with just
[E] [B] [D] paranoia in mind.
[E] And I know there's a hundred songs called
[Bm] Paranoid, but it just made sense [E] to me.
And [Bm] I started writing on it and then [Em] it
was [A] summertime, I only started the [Bm] record and I walked by [D] the [E] living room and
Dierks was [B] playing that song.
[Dbm] I came and just picked it up and learned it.
[B] I said,
get [D] in the truck, [Db] we're going to the studio and we'll [D] make it happen.
So we [E] cut his part.
[Gbm] We were going to do the old piece it together thing [D] and we didn't have to.
[E] He nailed it.
[D]
Everybody's telling [A] you what they think you ought to [G] do, acting like you're [Gb] just a boy.
That's why you're a [B]
paranoid.
[D] [Em] [Gb] [Bm]
I heard a friend [G] say that [D] this record sounded like old Ragweed stuff.
I was like,
well, [G] so do I.
I wrote that stuff from 16 to 33 years old.
So I kind of
know where my spot is on the planet.
So I got back to it.
I hope everybody digs it.
You know, it's me being me again.
Not trying to please somebody else.
Had to keep the windows up, [C] Matt BJ's burning [G] it down.
And I was thinking about changing my luck before [C] it all came back [G]
around.
