[G]
[C] Where were you when the world stopped turning?
[G]
That [D] September day
[C] Out in the yard
Your wife and children
Working on some [C] stage in L.A.
[F] Did you stand there and shun
The [C] sight of that black smoke
[F] Rising against [C] that blue sky?
[F] Did you shout out in [C] anger
And fear for your neighbor?
Or [Am] did you just sit [F] down and cry?
[B] I'm writing a song about that day
Because I think it was the right thing to do or not
And that song just came out of nowhere
As a godsend
But even after that
I was reluctant about recording it
And people around me wanted me to do it
And felt like I should [C] do it
Did [F] you burst out in pride
[C] With the red, white, and blue?
You [B] know, hesitant and reluctant about
Whether or not I should do that song
I did it on an [C] album or live
But it was a nervous performance, of course
Doing it for the first time live
In front of everybody in [F] television
I miss the song, I [C] love simple songs
I'm [F] not a real political [C] man
The show and for all the people
That have told me how much the song
Had affected them
But we still do today
[F] Faith, hope, and love
Are [C] some of the things he gave us
[G]
And the greatest [F] is love
[G] [C] Even after it [E] was a big hit
And everybody was talking about it
I thought, well, I'll perform this on stage
For a few years of my show
And it'll probably just go away
After the memory of 9-11 gets less and less
And I think people won't want to hear that
And I was completely wrong
[B] I've had so many comments from day one
About that song
From people that are lost relatives and heroes
And it's amazing how much people [F] have told me
That the song meant to them
You know, [G] and I'm not [C] trying to take credit for all that
I feel like I'm just a messenger on this song
[F]
[C] Where were you when the world stopped turning
[F] [G] That September [C] day
