Hey guys, this is Adam again with another tutorial Tuesday.
This week I'm whipping out the classical guitar to teach you a Spanish piece called
Asturias, also known as Leyenda by the composer Isaac Albanes.
It was originally written for piano, but was arranged for guitar and became very popular.
So I'm just going to teach the beginning of this song and by the end of this tutorial, here's what you'll be able to play.
[Em]
[D]
[Em]
[D]
[G] [C] [Bm]
[D]
[G] [D]
[Am] [Em] [A] [E]
Okay, so the technique of this song is that you're playing the melody with your thumb.
[Am] [Em] And then you're playing this drone on the B string, [B] the second string, between every melody note.
So I'll [N] talk about the drone later, but first, that main melody [G] played with the thumb
[E] [C]
[A] [Bm]
[G] [E] [Ab]
[E]
[Eb] [Ab]
[A]
[D] [Abm] is
[G]
[E] So as you [N] can see, it's a little tedious to name every string and fret for every note.
So hopefully you can hear the notes well enough and see in the video where my hands are to be able to figure it out without me naming every string and fret.
So again, [E]
[C]
[A] [E]
[G] [E]
now we're going to combine that drone [B] on the B string with it.
And I think the best way to do this is to alternate middle and index.
[Bbm] As opposed to if you just play the index, I feel like it sounds very mechanical and the piece doesn't seem to flow as well.
So we're going to try [E] learning alternating.
So basically what you'll be doing is thumb, middle, thumb, index.
Thumb, middle, thumb, index.
[G] Okay, so combining the melody with this drone, here's what you get.
[E]
[C]
[A] [E] [B] [G]
[Em] Play it three times.
[C] [D]
[G] [Em] Here's the third time.
[D]
[G]
Now at [B] this point, we're going to do this pattern.
[A] [Gb]
[G] And you do that another [A] time.
[Gb]
[G] So with the drone, [A] [Bm] [G]
[B] [Bm] [G]
then we go back and do that [E] original theme three more times.
[A] [D]
[G] [Em]
[D]
[G]
And now we're going to do [A] this,
[Bm] [G]
but we don't repeat that like we did [E] earlier.
We're going to keep going down the notes.
[A] So after this.
[Bm] [G]
[E] [D]
[C] [B]
[Eb] [A] [Bm]
[G] [Em]
[D] [C] [B]
And now we're at this second part.
And the fingering [G] this time [B] is
[C] [A]
[B] Notice I'm using my pinky here so that I can do my ring finger [Gb] here.
[Ab] So that pattern [B] again.
[C] [A]
[B] [Gb]
[Ab] Okay, with the drone.
[B] [C]
[D] [B] Do it three times.
No, do it twice, sorry.
Here's the second time.
[C] [Dm]
[Bm]
Now we're going to climb up, and it's going to look like this.
[Gb] [A]
[B] [Cm] [D]
[Ab] You'll notice I did a position [B] shift.
[Gb]
[A] [B]
Right here, I put my middle [G] finger on [B] the 10th fret.
[Cm]
[D] [B]
[Cm] And now I shift back down.
[A] [Eb]
[B] [G]
I think it goes here, let me [Bm] check.
[D]
[G] [Bm]
[G] Yeah, [Cm]
[A] so
[G] That's [Gb]
what we're doing.
[Bm]
[D]
[Bm]
[C] [D]
[B] [G]
[Bm] [B]
Then do this pattern again.
[C]
[B]
Repeat.
[C]
Oh, I lost [A] the 7.
[Bm]
Then we're going to climb again, but we're going to [B] skip the 5th string this time.
So it just goes.
[A]
[B] [A] [Ab] Just goes from [B] here to here.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [B]
[C] [Bm]
[B] [C]
And then it changes from what [G] we did before.
We're going to go to the 5th [A] string.
[G] [A] [B]
[G]
[D] [Bm]
[E] And there's the end.
So once again, this [Eb] second [G]
ending, [Ab] this climbing up [Bm] part.
[D] [B]
[C] [Bm]
[B]
[C] [A] [B]
[G]
[B] [Bm]
[E]
I'm just playing the open 6th string and the 7th fret of the 5th string together.
And so the piece keeps building and [N] building after that.
It's really fun.
Hopefully I'll get to do a tutorial for the rest of it.
Maybe later.
But I hope this has been a helpful tutorial.
Please leave comments on other suggestions that you might have.

I'll see you guys next week.

[A] So after this.
[Bm] [G]
[E] [D]
[C] [B]
[Eb] [A] [Bm]
[G] [Em]
[D] [C] [B]
And now we're at this second part.
And the fingering [G] this time [B] is
[C] [A]
[B] Notice I'm using my pinky here so that I can do my ring finger [Gb] here.
[Ab] So that pattern [B] again.
[C] [A]
[B] [Gb]
[Ab] Okay, with the drone.
[B] [C]
[D] [B] Do it three times.
No, do it twice, sorry.
Here's the second time.
[C] [Dm]
[Bm]
Now we're going to climb up, and it's going to look like this.
[Gb] [A]
[B] [Cm] [D]
[Ab] You'll notice I did a position [B] shift.
[Gb]
[A] [B]
Right here, I put my middle [G] finger on [B] the 10th fret.
[Cm]
[D] [B]
[Cm] And now I shift back down.
[A] [Eb]
[B] [G]
I think it goes here, let me [Bm] check.
[D]
[G] [Bm]
[G] Yeah, [Cm]
[A] so
[G] That's [Gb]
what we're doing.
[Bm]
[D]
[Bm]
[C] [D]
[B] [G]
[Bm] [B]
Then do this pattern again.
[C]
[B]
Repeat.
[C]
Oh, I lost [A] the 7.
[Bm]
Then we're going to climb again, but we're going to [B] skip the 5th string this time.
So it just goes.
[A]
[B] [A] [Ab] Just goes from [B] here to here.
[A] [Bm]
[A] [B]
[C] [Bm]
[B] [C]
And then it changes from what [G] we did before.
We're going to go to the 5th [A] string.
[G] [A] [B]
[G]
[D] [Bm]
[E] And there's the end.
So once again, this [Eb] second [G]
ending, [Ab] this climbing up [Bm] part.
[D] [B]
[C] [Bm]
[B]
[C] [A] [B]
[G]
[B] [Bm]
[E]
I'm just playing the open 6th string and the 7th fret of the 5th string together.
