guys, Travis here from Soundpure.
Today we're doing something very special in the studio.
We've actually gotten a handful of excellent, [A] excellent, very high quality nylon string
guitars in on consignment [G] recently, so we decided [D] why not do a microphone [A] technique
video focusing on [D] specific techniques for miking and recording nylon [G] string instruments.
So that's what we're doing.
[D] Starting with, we've got right here a [Bm] pair of our Schepps, [A] the CMC-6 bodies.
We've got the MK [F#]-2H capsules on them.
They're the [E] omni capsules with a [C#m] slight high frequency [D] extension.
[A]
They just provide a nice warm natural [D]
tone with a little bit of extra detail on the top end.
[G] It really [D] helps accentuate the top end detail of [G] these fine [D] instruments.
The other [C#m] thing you might notice [F#] compared to how we [A] normally record is there is no carpet
on the floor.
The reason for [G] this is we found that [F#] for [D] classical string instruments, miking [A] them with omnis,
getting them a little bit closer to [E] the ground to pick up a little bit more of the direct
reflection of the instrument straight off the ground helps create a more focused [F#m] image
of the [E] instrument, [D#m] whereas if you had omnis, of course, [F#] in this room with no carpet, a
little bit higher up, [B] the image might get a little diffuse and muddy and not [C#] as clear.
So we kept these a little [F#m] bit lower again just to [Bm] maximize the [C#] reflections [Em] off the floor
to get a little bit more focus.
[F#] We [Bm] do have a [E] combination of both [Em] standard only acoustic instruments as well as acoustic electric.
So what [B] we did with just the [Em] pure acoustic mics is we have a pair of Neumann TLM [Am] -107s
in the [F#] back as [B]
cardioid room [Em] microphones.
These microphones are [E] excellent, excellent [G] room mics because [B] they are very, very natural,
incredibly [Em]
transparent.
They've got a lot of detail but [F#] also a lot of musicality [Em] as well.
So when you combine the close mics of these warm, natural, open [F#m] sheps with [Em] the room mics
[D#m] of the 107s, you get [B] a nice depth, [E] a lot of transparency [F#] in the back wall, but [B] again a
lot of natural warmth and natural [C#] representation coming from the sheps here.
It's a really, [F#m] really fantastic [B] sound and I hope you enjoy.

So what we decided to do with the Starlight over here, which is a hybrid [D#m] acoustic and
electric instrument, is we kept [B] the sheps as they [E] were, which is the [F#m] CMC6 bodies, the
[F#]
[D#m] MK2H capsules.
[B] Those are running through our Avalon 2022 preamp.
It's an excellent [F#m]
combination, [Bm] full-bodied, [F] clean, [F#m] transparent.
[Em] We took the [F#] amplified [B] signal and ran it into [E] a Kahr Sportsman and [Em] miked it with a Shure
KSM313 ribbon mic [B] and ran that ribbon mic into a classic [Em] Vintic X73i preamp.
Now, despite this being a [B] combination that most folks would think of just straight classic
rock ribbon into [Em] Neve, [F#]
as you'll hear, it's actually very, [A] very fitting for this [E] classical
performance as [Em] it adds a little bit of fullness, a little bit of richness.
It's just a very [E] forgiving and a very musical sound for the amplifier [F#] and letting the sheps
pick up the [D#m] natural beauty, the natural warmth and the natural [E] tone of the Starlight
[F#]
acoustically.
So let's take a [B] listen.
Hope you all enjoy.
