Well, I just completed a new learn to play Chuck Berry DVD where I've broken down note [D] for note five
classic Chuck Berry songs
[A] Now what I did that's different about this DVD
[E] Most people when they think of Chuck Berry they think of the classic Johnny B
Goodlake [A] which everybody knows it's one of the first like you learn on guitar
But Chuck Berry had a lot more diversity than that and there was a lot of a lot of [B] different stylistic
Interpretations in his playing that I think [A] are often neglected
So I purposely went in and [E] chose five songs that featured different aspects [A] of Chuck Berry
[A]
[B] [E]
[A] Well, I think this DVD I think there's something for beginners intermediate and advanced players [D] on this DVD
I think for beginners [A] I
think just the rhythm tracks [B] alone and
Learning [Em] how to make [A] how to control your right hand
So that it keeps [D] perfect time and you work with a metronome and you get your pinky going and you develop the strength of your
Left [E] hand and there's a lot of early [D] on
Things that you need to learn for beginners for intermediates just knowing all those songs which have become standard repertoire
You have to know all those songs for any intermediate player.
It's indispensable and for [A] advanced players
[E] You're gonna [D] find that
Trying to separate all these Chuck Berry intros and solos it sounds so similar
[G]
But when you put a microscope on them are [D] so different and there's so much unique [E] information to be learned from that
I think advanced [D] players are gonna have a field day with that
[G] [D]
[E]
[D] You [G] know the techniques that the viewers are [D] gonna gain by viewing this DVD
Is what I would [Cm] call the art of playing in the pocket or the art of playing [F] in the groove
now
[C] It's really easy
To [Gb] kind of float [C] over Chuck Berry songs and play your Gary Moore licks and your Steve [Cm] Bilek's and your [C] whoever licks
[G] But to [G] really stay in the pocket and maintain that rhythmic feel
Throughout an [Gm] entire solo without [C] varying from at once and making that the drive of that solo carry the drive of the song
That's a [Eb] technique.
That's an art in [C] itself
And that's what I think is the most valuable part of learning this [Bb] music
The
[Eb] [Bb]
[Eb]
[Bb] [Db]
bottom line is this is still rock and roll and [Eb] it needs to be treated with [Bb] with respect and as rock and roll
[F] we're dry [Bb] and
Intensity is still what makes it go
[C] The excitement is what makes it go
Behind that is all the intricate little twists and turns that he [G] does within the rhythm.
It still stays in the pocket
It's an [C] art form
