[F] [C]
[G] I play music usually because it's the first thing that I get [C] up in the morning and think about.
[F] I wake up with music in my [Ab] head and I go to bed with music in [C] my head at night.
[A] If I see something with strings on it, [C] I've got to pick it up.
And if it's [Am] any good, I'm going to play [Fm] it for about 30 minutes, unless somebody [F] tells
me to stop.
[G] And if nobody else is around, I'm just going to play it until I can't feel my fingers anymore.
That's why [C] I play music.
[G]
[C] Because it's basically like breathing to me.
[F]
If I don't have enough of it, it's like [G] not getting enough air.
[A] You know, the [Ab] 23-year [G]-old
[C] me, I'm 37 now, is on this record.
[F]
The 28-year [Fm]-old me is somewhere on this record.
[G] The 30-year-old me is somewhere [D] on this record.
[Ab] And the 37-year-old me with two kids [C] and a wife is on this record.
And there's brain cells that have long been dead on this record.
There's me trying [F] to write a song like, oh, I love that song.
I want [G] to write a song like that.
There's that guy on this record.
There's a guy that wrote three [C] songs a day on this record [G] for four years straight [Bb] and didn't stop.
And there's a guy [D] who [C] ran [Bb] around the [F] country playing bluegrass because it seemed [Ab] like the
right thing to do at the time.
[A] There's a guy [C] who went and played rock and roll in clubs and made a rock and roll record
[F] just because he wanted to.
And he loved the guys in the band and loved every minute of driving around in his [G] own
truck with [Em] [C]
a truck full of gear going to play for [G] six people.
That guy's on this record.
[C]
To get all those people on this record is,
[F] it's a little overwhelming.
And so [G] I can't talk about individual songs on this record, not without [Am] drawing lines
between all of them.
Everything that I've done kind of [C] leads up to this.
All those things belong and they're [F] in this record.
Everything I've ever done.
The [G] fact that it exists for me [C] feels like accomplishment enough for me.
Like no [Ab] awards, [C] no, [Fm]
I'm not going [F] to say I don't, everybody wants [G] to win an award of
some kind or [F] something, but it's not [G] really about that for me.
I [A] don't really [G] make music for [C] that.
I like to make music because I love to make [F] music.
And [C] all of these songs are [F]
that.
[C]
[Bb]
[C] [Cm] And I read the [F] titles on [C] the [Bb] record [F] and they're written all [C] over the country.
And they're [F] songs that I remember [C] writing with people when [G] I barely knew them, [F] but now
I've known them for 10 years.
To [C] record them and the infancy of [G] friendships with people,
[C] now that are old friends or people
that have been at my [Bb] wedding or something, it's [F] [C] very cool to me.
There's a lot of good times on here and there's a lot of hard times on here and there's a
lot of [F] me making myself uncomfortable on here and then fighting through it and getting something
[Gm] out of it.
[C] They're not individual songs to me.
[G]
[Ab] They are [C] all one piece of something.
And that piece of something is
[G] hopefully the best of what I have to [F] offer musically [C] as
a player, as a singer, [G] and [C] as a writer.
Individually they, you know, some of them are going to have [F] way more personal stories
and some of them are going to have more just stories [G] of how they came about.
[Gm] But as a whole, I think they [G] represent the best of what I'm capable of at [C] this point in time.
Not to say that I'll ever get better or ever get worse or ever do anything again.
[F] But it's very overwhelming to hold 15 [G] years of effort [C] in your hand when you get it in
a package and you [G] get
It's 15 years of effort.
And this [C] is what I came up with.
