My silence holds [F#] secrets when [D#m] I answer but [F#] don't answer
Well, John [B] Carter Cash just kind of invited me into [F#] participating in this album
[A#] by sending me a couple of lyrics that hadn't been set to music that Johnny had written
and told me the story [D#m] of wanting to create an [A#m] album of music and a body of work
just sort of [D#m] by discovery.
That it [F#] was over [B] I did not see
I [F#] thought it was kind of brilliant that he would actually bother
sort of [F] [A#] writing a song in its entirety from maybe his own perspective
and then sort of to the [B] perspective of the person that he's writing about
like seeing both [C#] sides of it and going to the trouble of actually writing it out that [F#] way.
You felt you [B] understood
The very first challenge really was [D#m] crossing that [C#] threshold of changing one word, [F#] you know.
And I think I had to cross that right away where I'm thinking,
I [B] want to make a good song out of this, so that's going to have to be repeated
and this line's going to have to happen [C#] twice and that was a little scary.
Then [A#] we were all together [B] fine
[G#] Once I got past that, I just had to believe [D#m] that,
okay, this is something that [C#] Johnny would like or I wouldn't be sitting in here doing it.
[A#]
[D#m] [F#] I [G#]
think [D#m] I met the man once or twice in my life [C#] and he was so gracious
[F#] and he was such an influence on me [B] as a musician
and he also covered a song that I wrote.
And since that [C#] time, I felt like [D] he's maybe one [F#] of the bigger [B] presences in my life
in terms of an artist that I'm a fan of.
I suppose you [C#] never doubted
That we [A#] were together [D#m] fine
[B] [F#] Sometimes I'm a stranger to you
[B] Sometimes [F#] I'm a stranger to you
I haven't even processed it yet, you know.
You could ask me about it in a [D#] week and I'll have all kinds of [D] thoughts for you.
[F#] Right now it's like Twilight Zone, kind of surreal, amazing.
[B] I never really [F#] knew you were mine
