Hello and welcome to another riff of the week from Master of the Guitar.
This week we are going to jazz things up a little bit with Chitlins Concarney by Kenny Burrell.

[Eb]
[N] Chitlins Concarney is based around blues progression in C.
So we start off, [Abm] the three chords that we are using mainly is a C7 sharp [C] 9 [Cm] chord on the 1.
We play that with the 2nd finger [E] on the 8th fret of the E string for the C.
Our [Em] 1st finger plays the E 7th fret of the A [Dm] string and our 3rd finger bars [Bb] the [Eb] 8th fret on D, G and B strings like that.
[Cm]
So that's a C7 sharp 9.
And our 4th chord is an F7 [F] and that's played like that.
Where we have our 3rd finger on the 8th fret of the A string, [A] 2nd finger on the 7th [Eb] fret of the D string, our 4th finger is on the 8th fret of the [Ab] G string and then our 1st [F] finger is on the 6th [F] fret of the B string.
So that's F7.
And the last chord we have is a G7 sharp 9.
[G]
So our 2nd finger is playing the [G] 10th fret of the A string, our 1st [B] finger the 9th fret of the D [F] string, our 3rd finger the 10th fret of the G string and our 4th [Eb] finger is the 11th fret of the [Bbm] B string.
So these 3 [Cm] chords, [F] [Bbm]
[Cm]
the melody notes are from the C blues scale.
[Cm] [C]
[Eb] [F] [Ab]
[Cm]
[C] [Db] [E]
[C]
[Eb] [Cm]
[F] So we're back to 8th fret on the A string and [C] back to 8th fret on the E string.
[Cm]
[C] Now what you might [Db] find is it's always tricky to roll across adjacent [C] strings but [Bb] you don't want them [Cm] ringing out.
[C]
[Cm] [F] [Cm] [C]
And we finish that off with a wee [G] slide on the 9th fret of the 10th fret on the A string [Cm] and then [E] our last 2 notes 8th fret, 11th fret again on the E string.
[Cm] So we put it all together.
And [C]
[Cm]
[C] [Cm]
as I was saying we have all these chords.
[Bb]
This is where we [G] bring, we actually finger the full [A] 7 sharp 9 [Eb] chord but all we're doing is playing the D and the G strings [Cm] like that.
[F] [Cm]
[Eb] And then we finish it off with [Cm] that.
[C] So it's those [Cm] same 6 notes again.
8, 8, 11, 8, [F] [Fm] 8 on the A string and [Cm] then 8 on the E string again.
[F]
[Eb] [Cm] [C]
[G] So that's what we play [Cm] over the C7 sharp 9 chord.
When I then switch it to the 4 chord, the [F] F7, we have the [Cm] same riff again.
[F] And now we play this F7 shape.
So it comes from that chord but we're essentially just playing this, the root, the 3rd and the 7th [Bb] with our 2nd, 1st and 3rd fingers.
So our [F] 2nd is playing the 8th fret of the [A] A, 1st finger is the 7th fret of the [Abm] D and then our 3rd finger is the 8th fret of [F] the G string.
So [Bb] when I put that together we [Cm] have the riff again.
[C]
[Cm] And we finish it off with the 6 notes.
[C] [Gb]
Then when we change to the [Bb] 5 chord, we have [Cm] this.
So [Cm] we still have our 6 notes.
[F]
Then we slide from 9 [Gb] to 10.
[G] But then we play the 8th fret of [A] the D string.
[Cm]
[F] [Bb] And then we play [F] 8 [Eb] and then 9 and then 8 on the A string.
[Cm] And then we have [F] our
So when I put that together [Cm] we have our
[Bb] [F] [Cm] [C]
[Eb] We finish it off once again with our C7 sharp 9.
[N] So putting that all together, this is what we end up with.
[C]

[Bb]

So [Bb] when I put that together we [Cm] have the riff again.
[C]
[Cm] And we finish it off with the 6 notes.
[C] [Gb]
Then when we change to the [Bb] 5 chord, we have [Cm] this.

So that's F7. _
And the last chord we have is a G7 sharp 9.
[G] _ _ _
_ So our 2nd finger is playing the [G] 10th fret of the A string, our 1st [B] finger the 9th fret of the D [F] string, our 3rd finger the 10th fret of the G string and our 4th [Eb] finger is the 11th fret of the [Bbm] B string.
