Hi, Tom Emmanuel here.
When the great Chet [G] Atkins and I [F#] were [N]
recording together and songwriting
together, our songwriting was mainly through the mail in those days.
We sent tapes to each
other.
I was still living in Melbourne, Australia at that time and Chet was here in Nashville.
We sent a lot of ideas to each other, some we finished, some we didn't.
And a year after
his passing, he died on the 29th of June 2001, and a year later I was in my house in Suffolk
in England and I got up really early and I came down to my office and put on some of
[A#] Chet's music and I thought, what can I do to celebrate his life today, to celebrate
[G] his influence on me and so many people.
[N] I started digging through some of these tapes
that we'd sent to each other and you know I found this little melody that we didn't
even get to.
He says on the tape, this is my idea for like a fiddle tune, you may want
to write another part and finish it.
But we never did get to do that and I thought, that's
what I can do.
I can write a song with him a year after his passing.
So this is what
was on the tape.
It was like [A] this.

Sounds like a typical [N] Appalachian simple melody but
it does sound like it came from a fiddle and Chet was a fiddler.
So I thought, okay, I'll
see if I can make this into a complete piece and I used all the tools at my disposal which
were, if it has a repeating melody, then I change the chords underneath, the bridge
needs to lift off and go somewhere else, we need a key change, we need a surprise somewhere,
we need a good beginning and a good ending and stuff like that.
So I got to work on it
and a couple of hours later I had this finished.
So here it is and I played it for some friends
of mine at the Chet Atkins Convention when I first had written the song and they both
said, oh it sounds like a ramble, so I called it Chet's Ramble.
Here it is.
It starts out
