Hi boys.
Hello, [E] how you doing?
I'm well, how are you?
Very good, this is fun isn't it?
Well it is, my producer just told me you have no idea who I am [Ab] and you've never seen the show.
Absolutely right.
[D] So that's perfect.
Yeah.
So I can just start in on you real quick.
Yes, [G] yes.
You [B] see I know very well.
My kids told me that you can be a bit tough on [N] guests.
Well I'm just tough on people when I see them.
Right, okay.
Generally, people at all.
Just any person.
I love that.
It could be somebody in the audience, it could be you, it could be my reflection in the mirror.
Do you find people challenging?
Is that why?
I find people annoying.
Right.
I want to tell you, well I'm sure you hear this all the time, both of you, but I grew
up and did some very discouraging things to posters of you in my bedroom.
Really?
You are my sister, Sky.
Uh huh.
Uh huh, and she's Mormon now.
Oh dear.
It's the effect he has on women.
Yeah.
And when I told her, I saw her in New York City this weekend and I said you're never
going to believe who I'm having on the show this week because we had, I mean it was, you
know, like anybody my age growing up and they said, she said, please tell me that, you know,
Nick Rhodes is coming.
And I said, he is, and I'm going to tell him you're Mormon.
She said, please don't tell him I'm Mormon.
She said, I don't want him to think it's because of him.
Do you hear that a lot, that people convert to Mormonism?
Not so much for Mormons, no.
It's a first, isn't it?
It is one of the first.
Now you guys just came from Coachella, right?
Yes.
And how was that?
We had an amazing show at Coachella.
Did you?
Yeah, we were, we, it wasn't our [E] show, you know, so you've got an audience [N] which is mixed
with, you know, they see a lot of different people.
But PR, somebody, a friend of mine texted me and said, everybody's come out and they're
watching Duran Duran.
It was fantastic.
Of course.
We got them singing, we got them dancing, we got them with their arms in the air.
It was, it was really rocking.
Well, you can't not dance to your music and I don't dance, but I even dance to your music.
I like to do it alone in my room.
And you guys are going to Ibiza too, right?
Yes, yeah.
We've gone all over the world.
Ibiza's a very exciting one for us to go to.
Where did you, where's your favorite place to perform?
Wherever there's an audience.
Actually, I would say, I would say that really America is our heartland.
We've got, I think we have, this country we have the most loyal audience, the people who
stuck with us the longest, the biggest audience we've got in the world is in this country.
[Abm] We've been coming here since 1981 and we've been having a [N] fantastic time ever since then.
So, you know, we love you guys.
We really do.
Do you enjoy, do you enjoy performing now more so than you did back, you know, years
ago or do you?
I think we've always liked performing actually.
I mean, when we started out, the first thing we did when Simon was in the band, he was
there for a week and we said, right, we're going to, we're going to [Gb] write a whole album's
worth of material because we've got to have at least 45 minutes to perform [Ab] in sort of
two weeks time.
Yeah.
And that's how it all started.
I'll tell you one thing.
I mean, I've, what I've really noticed now is I don't get nearly as [G] nervous as I used to get.
And that's a huge weight that comes off.
Absolutely.
You know, you still get this kind [Abm] of frisson before you come on stage.
And somebody told me once, another [B] performer told me once, he said, Simon, it's not fear,
it's adrenaline.
And that's become a bit of a mantra for me.
Yeah.
But I think it's wonderful to be able to walk out on stage [Fm] relaxed and [A] comfortable.
[F]
And that's something which didn't happen in the beginning.
So in a way, I kind of enjoy these shows more [E] than the ones at the beginning.
Just took us 30 years to learn how to play the saxophone.
You're just a little slow on the uptake.
That's it.
Now, [G] tell us how the band started, because it was you and it was John Taylor.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, we started it when we were in school.
I was 16.
John was [G] 18.
And we actually went to see punk bands.
And we saw, I remember [Gb] the first day I saw a band on stage playing four chords because
I was learning how to play guitar and I never really made [G] it much past four chords.
[Abm] But the four chords they were playing happened to be the ones I knew.
And I went home and I thought, I can play that song on a guitar.
So we could [Ab] be on stage, the realization that it could actually happen.
And then we just bought instruments and learned to play [F] things.
I bought a synthesizer.
John swapped to bass because it had less [Abm] strings.
We're going to get Chewy a passio.
[E] I'm sorry, [N] passio.
I can't even say it right.
Do you guys ever fight?
Do you ever have, I mean, you've stayed together for so long, you never hear about arguments.
Karate.
Karate, right.
You do actually.
I mean, it's, and [E] it's because it's a very personal industry.
You know, you're talking about [Eb] expressing yourself in [Gb] music and [G] in words and it's very personal.
And the arguments between us get very personal.
You know, things of, you know, pork pies have been thrown and doors slammed.
And, you know, you've heard of the word, the phrase, a pop strop.
Yeah, we have.
No, I haven't actually. You haven't.
No, what does that mean?
A pop strop is when a pop star has a strop, I guess.
Oh, okay.
Got it.
I've had a pork pie thrown in my face.
But that was actually at a Coachella one year.
Anyway, thank you guys for stopping by and congratulations.
You guys, the new album is in stores now and it's called All You Need Is Now.
