[F] [Bb]
[F]
Hi, this is [Bb] Shaka Khan, and you're watching ShowMeHowToPlay .com.
[F] Trouble little angel, [Bb] isn't flying blind [F] to [Am] the time.
[G]
[E] My earliest memory of singing, [G]
[N] and I thought everybody did in my day,
was when I was very young.
[E] Cleaning [Ab] house on Saturday with my [G] parents, and we were all singing to Frank Sinatra,
or to Doris Day, or to Harry Belafonte, stuff like that.
I remember we were at one club [Abm] doing a competition for kids,
and people [G] started throwing money on the stage, and I was like,
[Ab]
I [G] must have been about 12.
[N] But when the money came on the stage, I started equating singing with money.
[G]
That was the first time I ever equated something that I could make a living at,
if I ever wanted to.
That's the possibility of it, ever entered my mind.
And when they were calling me Aretha, I was like, what are they talking about?
[Abm] Because I never, I wasn't into comparing myself [G] to anybody.
I never thought I was good, that good.
I never thought, in my wildest dreams, I never thought that I was [Bb] that good a singer.
[C]
[G] I don't do a lot of preparation or anything.
I never, ever, or rarely warm up.
I have to remind myself to at least start talking before I go on the stage.
[Abm]
[Gm] But I do, [E] the one thing I do do, is I get lots of sleep.
When I'm not [N] singing, chances are I'm in the bed.
You know?
I don't, you know, [G] the days I used to go out and party,
and a lot [Ab] after the gigs and stuff like that,
I used to get hoarse a lot, and that's why I got notes.
And I was drinking, and you know, [G] and stuff.
So now, all I have to do is just sleep until I'm done.
Sometimes I wake up too early, [Abm] and I'll say, go back to sleep.
I make my, [G] put myself back down, until, you know, I just [Gm] can't stay in the bed [Am] anymore.
[Bb] [C] [D]
Well, here's what [Am] actually happened.
She didn't persuade me, but that was, she called [G] me, and she thanked me.
[E] She said, I'm so [G] glad you're going to do a job.
[C]
I [A] said, [Ab] yeah, I guess I am too.
You know, I started doing my lines.
[G] She said, [Ab] because I didn't think you were going to do it.
[Abm] I told everybody [G] you'd say no.
She said, I'm surprised [A] you're doing it.
I [G] said, so am I, Oprah.
Actually, I wasn't going to do it.
I said, I did say no.
At first I did, but what happened was, I said, but Oprah, this was meant to happen.
I said, it's bigger than you or me.
I said, every corner I turned, everywhere I went, the color purple was in my [Gm] face.
You know what I mean?
It was like some [Bb]
[F] preordained thing.
[Gm]
[Am] [Bb]
[C] [D]
[Gm] [Am] [Bb]
[C] [D]
My sister Tammy and [G] I had been talking for some time about wanting to work with Tammi.
Finally, she said, this is called, they got a studio.
They just moved here to Santa Monica.
Let's [E] call here.
Man, it was like, who, what's, who's who?
[G] They were like, so honored to work with me.
[N]
At first, they had to get over that.
We had to get over that.
Then, they were sitting down there playing all my stuff.
[G] They were going on and on.
It took a couple weeks for us to get over the whole idea that we were going to work together.
We co-wrote a lot of stuff.
Some of the stuff I brought with me that I had written for my next CD.
[E] Then, breakfast.
[Em] I [Ab] did Jimmy, basically, because I love Jimi [Abm] Hendrix.
I [G] wanted to educate, too, some younger people to how cool Jimi Hendrix is and how they need to get into that.
I wanted to educate [N] a lot of people to Joni Mitchell, [Dm] too.
[G] How these are people that you can [E] really listen to and learn from and really enrich [G] your life, your art, everything through these [Bb] people.
[Am] [C]
Well, [Ab] unfortunately, many of them are dead.
[G] I did Zoom Marvin Gaye.
I would love to work with Miles Davis again.
I want to work with Anthony Hamilton.
I love him.
Stevie Wonder and I haven't sung together yet.
Maybe.
Okay.
We get to sing [Dm] together.
Just [Em] to name a few.
