[Eb] So the song, I just wrote it [B] this morning, so I've never read the lyrics.
Okay, well let's hear the new one.
Yeah.
The new one's good, yeah.
[Bm]
[D] [A] [D]
[G] [D] [A] [D]
Oh [G] my [D] daddy's [A] from Memphis
Country Girl [D] is one of the few songs I've written [A] that is completely word for word, literally true.
[G]
Most of [D] my lyrics are more [A] poetic and [Bm] metaphorical, but Country [G] Girl is just straight up the story [A] of my upbringing and of my family.
And [G] my [D] mama's from [A] Australia
And she [G] grew [D] up without [A] a dad
And [G] so she [D] raised a home
As you [A] grow up you realize that all the people that came before you, your grandpa and his grandpa and his grandpa and your grandma and her [Bm] grandma and her grandma,
that [A] all the hardships [Bm] and struggles and challenges that they might have gone through in [G] their lives have really [D] allowed [A] you to have a platform for your [Bm] life
and have made [Gbm] you a [D] better person because it's made them [G] stronger.
[A] And that's what Country Girl is about.
Cause [Bm] I'm a [D] country girl
I love the trees [A] and the flowers
[D] Those well [A] spent hours
[G] Staring up at [A] the stars
[Bm] I'm a country girl, no I [Gm] live in the city, like I take it with me at all.
[Ebm] Cause it means I'm a country girl but I live in the city.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, I'm a country girl though I live in the [C] city, and those lights are so pretty but I'd rather be.
Oh, good words.
Okay, [Bm] let's go to the [A] first chorus.
Country Girl was written and recorded on the same [G] day.
So I woke up [A] one morning early [Bm] before our session [D] and this was really early days of making the album.
This [A] was the first week.
[D] And I wrote [A] that song and I was [G] kind of [D] emotionally wrecked.
And I brought it in to [Bm] Rick and Gus and played it for them.
We all kind of felt that it was special and it was important that it was recorded that day.
Because the [A] emotions were just so fresh in my mind and in my soul.
You never quite [D] feel and express a song as purely as the day that you wrote it.
When you're kind of still in that [A] space.
We put down the guitar and the vocal that day.
It's one of the only two acoustic songs on the record.
We do [G] have a very soft [D] but present [A] Juno synth that just lends [G] a [D] beautiful vibe [A] to the acoustic guitar.
[G] [A]
[Bm] [A] [D] And then we also have [A] [D] throughout the [A] song and the kick sound that you're hearing is actually the [D] sound of my heartbeat.
We took [A] a mic and we [D] recorded it and that's the kick sound that you hear.
So I can say that I put my heart [G] into this record, [D] literally.
