Here's [Ebm] a great intro, especially for rock [G] guitarists [Db] playing electric [Gm] guitar.
But there's [Eb] no reason not [Db] to try it on your acoustic as [Bm] well, if you like.
I'm going to [Gb] show you the basis of the lead guitar [B] intro that Francis Rossi [G] plays.
Although it's [Gb] the lead [G] guitar part, I would say that for [Db] most beginners it's actually
easier to play than the [Bm] underlying rhythm [G] guitar part.
Here's [Dbm] what we'll cover in this lesson.
[Bb]
[Fm]
[Bb] [F]
[A] [F]
[Bb] [F]
[Gb] OK, let's take it one riff at a time.
Start with [Eb] your third finger on the third [Db] string at the [G] third fret.
Then play these three notes.
So that's three, [Bb] two, [Dm] and then three on [F] the D string with [G] [C] the third finger as well.
[Bb] [A] [F] So [Db] fingering [F] three, two, [Bb] three.
[F] For this [G] riff, the same three notes [Ebm] are played twice, but with a shift of [Gm] accent like this.
[A] [F] Notice [Gb] that I use a little vibrato technique the second time I arrive at this note to help [Bb] emphasise it.
[F]
[G] Now Francis [Gm] Rossi normally plays this riff about [Gb] eight times [Db] through, during the warm [C]-up
part of the intro.
[Gm] And then as the [Gb] drums kick in and the 12-bar [B] sequence starts, he keeps [Bb] that same riff going
over the first four bars of [Gb] F.
One, two, [Bb] three.
[F]
Then as the [Gb] underlying chord shifts to B [G]-flat, he responds [B] just by changing the riff [Ebm] by one note.
Instead of this note, we go down to this [Dbm] note under the [B] first finger on the [C] G string.
[G] The rhythm and the accenting [Db] stays exactly the [Eb] same.
So we put the vibrato accent every [Db] second time we hit [Bb] this [Fm] note.
[Gb] After playing through [G] that B-flat riff twice, it's back [Bb] to the F riff [D] for two bars.
[Bb]
[F]
Then over a change [B] to a C chord, we play this riff that starts with a hammer-on [Gm] pull-off
lick [B] on [Eb] the G string from fret [Db] two to fret three and back.
[G] Like this.
[D]
[G] So you're just [E] bouncing that third finger [G] off the string [B] at the third [G] fret, keeping
[Dbm] the second finger held [B] down here on the third string at [A] fret two.
[D] Then to the [A] note at the first fret on the [C] B string, then [Eb] back down the third string,
[E] fingering three, two, [Bm] open.
Like [Bb] this.
[A] [G]
And then back to fret [A] two [Gb] on the G string.
[G] So altogether [C] [Dm]
that's, [C] [Bb] [A]
[G] [Am]
[A]
[Gm] at full speed, that's [G] probably the trickiest [D] part of the whole intro.
So it may be a good idea [Bm] to [Db] pause the video at this [G] stage and work through what we've
covered so far.
Here's the last bit.
[A] [Ab] [F]
[Gb] So that's two hits [Dbm] on fret two on the G string, [A] followed by three hits [Gb] on fret one,
[Ab] [Db]
G string, [G] open.
And then hit [E] once [G] at fret three on the D [F] string to complete that phrase.
[Ab] [F] And then there's a couple more notes, a [Gb] couple more hits on that same [F] note,
just [B] to complete the bar really.
[A]
[F]
[Gbm] And then we're back into [C] the F riff for [Bb] two bars, [F]
[Db] before the whole thing starts again.
[G] Here's the [Gb] whole thing played through [B] nice and slow.
[Bb]
[Fm] [Bb]
[F]
[A] [Ab] [F]
And more or less at full [G] speed.
[Bb]

[G] [Eb] I'll [G] tap that out for you and include a [Eb] printout of it with this [G] video.
