One of the things we do in our show is something we call songwriting 101.
Because so many times the audience will, or people will just say to me, which comes first,
the music or the lyrics?
The answer is it varies.
What I do is show the audience how we write a song, Gary, Rudy, and I.
We take turns starting because starting is always a challenge.
So Rudy might start one night with a little gypsy groove or something.
And then Gary or I will just sing something over it and one thing leads to another and
the audience sees how it's done.
And we have done this every night.
New song, we never talk about it beforehand.
It's fresh, just like when we walk into a room and it's terrifying because there's this
blank page and you have no idea.
You have nothing.
And you have to take from nothing and make a something.
And there have been some nights when we got ourselves in what looked like a pretty big jam.
Where were we going?
How were we going to bring that back?
So this was actually a song.
And that was another fun thing on the tour because sometimes we have to get a little
silly to do it.
But when we do bring it around and we know how to do that because that's what we do,
the audience goes, oh my God, they did it.
They're like hanging on the edge of their chair saying, how are they going to get out
of this mess?
And we do it.
We got into the part of the show that every night I look forward to and I also dread.
We call it songwriting 101.
[G] La da da da [C] da da da da da [G] da da da da.
She was mine on Sunday.
Then the chorus can [C] go.
She was [D] gone [G] by Tuesday.
And she called [D] and said she [G] changed her mind.
[C] She was [D] back [G] on Thursday.
But [A] she only came to get the things she left behind.
[D]
[B] There you go.
[G]
So it would be like, and the verses [Gm] would be like, you know, I know I've been away.
[Em] That kind of a thing.
I know I've been away for a long time.
And you [D] must be worried [Em] if you're still on [C] my mind.
Hold that thought.
[G]
I can't write that fast.
Well tough.
[D] No, [G] no, no, no.
50 [C],000 miles [G] away.
[C]
[G] And I can't be [C] with you [G] today.
Four.
[C]
[G] [C] You're the one I'm always [G] thinking of.
[Am] I can't be with you in [D]
Sacramento.
[Am] But any city [D] Sacramento.
When [G] you're in love.
[E]
[C] [G] [C] Wanna know what's, if you wanna know what's inside [G] my heart.
[C] [D] Hold me up [G] to the [Em] light.
[C] If you [D] really wanna know the way [Em] I feel about you.
[C] Just look [D] in my eyes [C] tonight.
[G] [N] Just like the [G] love and passion.
Just [E] what I love.
[D] You know the score.
[Bm] I ain't fool you.
[G] Just [D] let the love [A] and passion [D] rule you.
You know the score.
[Bm] I couldn't, no, no, no.
I couldn't love [D] you [A] anymore.
You [D] know the score.
[Bm]
[D] You don't care [Ab] about it because it's gone.
Great, so please.
[A] What is your idea?
Well, it isn't a great idea.
But it was like I was listening to some news about the Dodgers selling Paula Duke or something like that.
And thinking about sports.
And I was thinking about alpha males on steroids.
[N] Good night everybody.
God bless you.
Drive safe.
[G] [A] I [G] think the natives are getting restless.
Let's play it through.
There's a blue [Cm] moon in the sky.
[G] But I [Cm] don't really care.
[G] What difference [Em] does it make?
[E] What color is [D] up there?
[G] I lost [Cm] him yesterday.
I [G] felt something.
I lost him [Cm] yesterday.
So [D] who needs a [Em] blue moon [Am] when I feel, when I feel [C] this [G] way?
[N] You like that?
