The Lost Chord by Arthur Sullivan.
This man knew a thing or two about melody and making it come
across for everybody.
Seated one day at the organ, I was weary and ill at ease,
while my fingers wandered idly, how does it go, over the noisy keys.
Pure sentiment, absolutely, but here is a most wonderful
melody.
I think that it's my job as a performer to try and make the
most mechanical of all instruments in its natural form
come across for you and make it sing for you.
I've always believed that singers are the true musicians.
Why?
Because they create everything from their interior or
biodynamically or organically, as you say, as they say in the
health food store or the Whole Foods shop.
So we do everything in our power to make this great compilation
of wood and metal and thousands of pipes and electric relays
and all the rest.
We try to make this melody come through and make music for all the listeners.
I remember at conservatory when I was studying piano, for
example, or any of the instruments, they would say, oh,
Carla, you must make that line sing.
They never, ever said, oh, make that line xylophone or make
that line tuba or make it sousaphone.
They said, make that line sing.
And so that, of course, with all my good force, I will
attempt to do in this performance of The Lost Chord
by Arthur Sullivan.
