Lonesome Valley,
[C] it's so close to my heart.
The song Lonesome Valley on its own was enough.
And so I took the chorus of it and [F] wrote a song around the year of 2003
when we lost [C] Mama, we lost John, we lost my little sister [G] Rosie.
[C] And it was a hard year for my family all the way around.
And it took me about ten years to get that song out of me.
But nothing made sense except to have Lonesome Valley in there.
[F] It was the right sentiment.
And [C] it's one of those ones that I remember [G] singing on the road with them
[C] and when the Carters were on the road with John and we would all go out
and we were all just so happy and we would sing it as a [F] spiritual happy song.
[C] But it's really a sad thing.
It's about walking through the [F] valley, the shadow of death pretty much.
We all have to, you know, we come in [C] alone, we go out alone.
And it's basically we've got to walk that [F] Lonesome Valley by yourself.
And it's like everybody's way of grieving is [C] different.
And I [Am] just needed to get this out of me.
I needed to talk [C] about what it was like when Mama passed,
what it was like [Am] for John, and I [C] didn't go into great depths.
And I think anybody that's lost parents could totally relate to this song.
That's lost anything, anyone they love, anything they love, you know,
they can relate to this song.
And it was hard to write, [F] and I'm not going to cry,
but when I do it live, sometimes I lose [C] it.
And that's okay, [G] you know.
I think that's [C] all right.
It's like we're all just trying to get through life.
The original song was very much a very simple, it was super simple.
I got on the piano, and [F] my emotions come out musically through that.
So it changes [C] quite a bit.
I had a little [G] help from AP on [C] this one.
Everybody's got to walk [F] that [C] Lonesome Valley.
You [F] got to walk that Lonesome Valley.
One of the coolest things [C] for me was that I asked my good friend,
Vince Gill, if he would sing with me.
[F] And he said, yeah, buddy.
He's [C] got a little buddy.
And [Am]
he has [C] the most gorgeous, [Am] wistful voice.
It's [C] so much soul in it.
And it was just I never had really got to sing with him,
[Am] so that just was the cherry on top for me.
And [F] I will say this, he has been such a sweet [C] person to me
when I was grieving so for my family, and he [G] showed up.
And, you know, my father, Carl Smith,
there was [Am] a lot of people from the music industry came, but Vince came.
[F] And that meant a lot to me.
And Vince was one of the only people that my daddy actually [C] really liked, his music.
