Hi, welcome back to the Newbie Sax School.
My name is Simon Curry and we're going to show you now how to play the intro to Careless Whisper.
[F] [Dm]
So [Gm]
[F] [E] the whole key of the piece is a minor key.
It's a B minor key for us and
the intro starts on a C-sharp, which is the top C-sharp, which is your thumb on and no fingers.
No fingers at all and it's up there.
Okay, and also add a bit more pressure on the reed to get that high note.
So the next note is a B, which is a one finger with your thumb on.
[G]
Okay, and the note after that is an F-sharp.
So it's one, two, three and the middle one there and you've got your thumb on the back.
[A] [Dm]
[G] And then the next note is a D, which is your thumb on and one, two, three, four, five, six.
And it sounds.
[Dm]
So that's your first phrase.
So it does it again, [Db] the same five notes.
[Dm]
[Gb] I'll do it again slowly.
[Dm]
[C]
Okay, so the next note is the A.
So that's a two finger like that with the thumb on and the G [N] with the three fingers with your thumb on.
And then the D, which is one, two, three, four, five, six with the thumb on.
[F]
And then [D] a middle B.
There it is.
No thumb, this is no thumb.
[Ab] I'll play that phrase.
[Bb] [D]
So add those three phrases together.
[F]
[Bb] And then there's another phrase after that, which is the A, G, D.
A, G, D with your thumb on.
[Eb] [Bbm] So the whole lot goes [E] [Dm] and
[Bb] [Bbm]
the final downward phrase starts on a G, which is three fingers with thumb on.
F [N] sharp, which is thumb on still, middle one there.
And then the D, six fingers, one, two, three, four, five, six, thumb on.
And then a middle B, one finger, no thumb.
[G] And then a G, new note for us, three fingers.
[Bb]
So [E] from the start, I'll play normal speed first and slow.
[F]
[Bb]
[E] I'll do that slowly.
[Dm] [F]
[Bb]
[Dm] [Bb]
[A] Now the run-up starts on F sharp, lower F sharp.
So that's one, two, three, middle finger, no thumb.
And the G, three fingers.
[Bb] Then an A, [C] two fingers.
Then a B, one finger.
[F]
A [E] C sharp, no fingers.
Then a D, six fingers with your thumb on.
[F] Then an E.
And F sharp.
[A]
And so that run-up sounds.
[C] [F] [C]
So the whole lot sounds.
[Dm] [F] [Bb]
[D] [F] [A]
So that's your tune, basic tune.
Now you can make that sound a bit more pro because the original had got a [Gm] glissando going up to the
first note, which is a flurry of notes ending on the high note, the C sharp.
Now in this key it's quite easy to do because we're going to do a D major scale, which is D,
which is all with the thumb on.
D, E, F sharp, G, A to the B.
And it sounds.
And you say that doesn't sound like it, but when you speed it up
and then you get to the top note, which is a C sharp.
So it's D, E, F sharp, G, A, B and then C sharp at the end.
[C]
[G] [Fm] And at the bottom note, if you slightly take the pressure off your jaw a little bit
and then [Dbm]
you've got your glissando.
[Dm]
And so the second C sharp you've got there, you can do a C to C sharp little finger slur.
So C to C sharp.
[E] So you've got that.
So you tongue the C [Eb] and open on the C sharp.
[Db] [Dm]
[F] Now [Bb] [C]
on the A you could do a G to A, which with a slidey note.
So it's G to A, tongue the G and lift your finger onto the A.
[Am] And [Eb] [Bb]
then the G on the rundown, do an F sharp to G.
Little trill.
So.
[Eb] [Dm] [Fm] [Bb]
[A]
[Eb] [E] [Dm]
[D] And end on the B at the end.
So there you have, that's how to play the intro to Careless Whisper.
