[B] I was in [Abm] an algebra class [N] in ninth or tenth grade and this teacher, well she's an awful
person but she was going around the room, I knew why she was doing it too, she wanted
to make fun of every single one of us independently.
She went around the room and asked each student what are you going to do when you grow up,
what are you going to study, what do you do with that degree?
She got to me and God I wish I'd said philosophy or something.
I said I'm going to move to Nashville, Tennessee as soon as possible.
I will write songs and they will be on the radio.
And she said that's [Dbm] stupid, that won't [Ab] happen, remember where you're from and have a really
good back up plan.
And on this particular morning, don't ever by the way Instagram and drive, it is really dangerous.
I was on Instagram in a roundabout, looked down at my phone and found out Guy Clark had
passed away, who was one of my all time songwriting heroes.
And I started crying.
Well I meet Jeremy Bussey for the very first time that morning, we're going to make something
up, it's our first date.
And I'm a mess.
He's like wow, get yourself together, [N] let's chat for a little bit, where are you from,
how did you get here?
We started trading stories back and forth and I tell him about this awful person.
And he said have you played the Opry?
And I said not yet but I will.
This is a year and a half before the Opry has ever heard my name.
He said I like the way you think so all we have to do today is write a song, whatever
you want to sing in the Ryman Circle for the very first time.
Let's write it in such a way that Guy Clark wouldn't hate it if he had to listen to it.
[Gb] [Abm] And then we [B] named the record that.
[Gb] [E] [B]

[Abm]
[Gb] [Abm] [E]
[Abm] [E] [B] When the lights come up and I hear the band, where they said [E] I'd never be, it's exactly
where I am.
[Abm] I hear the crowd, I look [Gb] around and I can't find an empty [E] chair.
[Abm] Not bad for a girl [B] going nowhere.
[Gb] [B] I get these calls out on the road.
I [E] heard your song on my radio.
You [B] always said you'd make it big.
And I tell all [E] my friends that I knew you back when.
Don't [Abm] forget all us little [Gb] folks.
And when you [E] crash and burn, [Abm] remember we told you so.
[B] And then the lights come up and I hear the band, [Abm] where they said I'd never be, it's [E] exactly
where I [Abm] am.
I hear the crowd, I look [Gb] around and I can't find one [E] empty chair.
[Abm]
[B] Not bad for a girl going nowhere.
[Gb]
[B] [Abm]
I need to thank [Gb] my daddy [E] for that first set of strings.
[B] And all those folks who swore [Gb] I'd never be anything.
[Abm] It took a whole lot of yes [Gb] I wills and I [Abm] don't care.
A whole lot of [Gb] basement dives and [E] county fairs.
[Abm] To this show right now, [Gb] y'all sure look [E] good out [Abm] there.
It's not [B] bad for a girl going [Abm] nowhere.
[Gb] [B] Not bad for a girl going nowhere.
