[F] I wrote the song in the mid-90s.
It was my conversation I was having with myself.
As you roll along, your better angels come in and out of sight.
[Cm] I was looking to fill my music with purpose once again.
[E] Living in [F] California, [Eb] there were a lot of migrant worker issues, [F] [Cm] immigration issues [F] constantly.
[C] [F] [Ab] You had a sense that where California [Fm] was in the mid-90s was where [Cm] the rest of the country was going to be going in the next decade.
And it really has.
A [F] combination of running around by myself [Bb] and with the band and coming [F] in contact with a lot of people [Ab] that work at Variety for a variety of different [Cm] [F] grassroots social organizations
[Bb] who were seeing the [C] demand for [Cm] their services [Ab] for food banks and such had been going up and up and up even as we heard [Eb] about the economic bubble on top.
From this song, I wrote an album of [F] songs [Cm] kind of set in the West.
Let me just sing it.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Bb] [Cm]
[Bb] [F]
[Cm]
Men walking along the railroad tracks.
[Eb] Found some places [Bb] no going back.
Highway patrol choppers coming up over the ridge.
[Cm] Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge.
Sheltered lines stretching around the corn.
[C] [G] [Eb] Welcome to the new [Bb] world, Lord.
Family sleeping in their cars in the Southwest.
[Cm] No home, no job, no peace, no rest.
[Ab] Well, the highway is alive at night.
[Eb] But nobody's [Bb] kidding nobody about [Cm] where it goes.
[C]
[Bb] I'm sitting down here in the campfire line.
[Cm] Searching for the ghost of Tom Joe.
[Cm] He pulls a prayer book out of a sleeping [C] bag.
[Gm] [Eb] Preacher lights up a bud and [Bb] takes a drag.
Waiting for when the [F] last will be first and the first will be last.
[Cm] In a cardboard box near the underpass.
[C] You got a one-way ticket to the promised land.
You [Gm] [Eb] got a hole in your belly and a [Bb] gun in your hand.
Sleeping on a pillar of solid rock.
[Cm] Bathing in the [Gm] city [Cm] of Ecuador.
[Ab] Well, the highway is alive at night.
[Eb] But where [Bb] it's headed, [Cm] everybody knows.
[Bb] I'm sitting down here in the campfire line.
[Cm] Waiting on the [Eb] ghost [Cm] of Tom Joe.
