[A]
In [Db] 2012, a tape was found containing mixdowns of what would become Bob Dylan's self-portrait album.
These recordings became the inspiration for the bootleg [G] series Volume [Am] 10, Another Self-Portrait.
I went [G] to see the gypsy
[Am]
Staying in a [G] big hotel
He
[Am] smiled when he saw me [G] coming
[Am] And he wished me well
Must have been right around 1970.
Bob used to come when we'd play the Bitter End.
He called me one day and asked me if I would help him try out a studio.
That's how he phrased it.
Trying out the studio turned out to be recording [B] self-portrait.
Let's [D] just take this one.
You ready?
[G]
Down in some [Am] lone valley
[D] In a sad and [G] lonesome place
We started recording, you know, things that you just wouldn't think that Bob would do.
If I was a [Am] poet
And [D] could write [G] a fine hand.
I thought the album would be called Folk Songs of America or something.
I'd write my love a [Am] letter
That she'd understand
[G]
[C] [D] It [Em] seems to me that he [F] called [C] it self-portrait because [F] this was the [Ab] music [C] that he came out of.
Yes, tell [Dm] old Bill
[Em] When he [Dm] comes home
[C] To leave [Dm] them [Em] downtown [B] girls alone
[C]
[Dm] This morning
[C] This [G] evening [C] so soon
For the tired horses in the sun
I must go to get them
Some of the people who really were very critical of it have realized that there's some marvelous things
They [G] just weren't the things that they wanted to get out [D] of a Bob [E] Dylan album.
[B] As [Abm] far as I could [Gb] tell New Morning [E] was a [B] reaction to [Abm] the criticism of self [Em]-portrait.
Like the [F] red rose of summer [Em] that blooms in the [F] day
[G] Time [F] passed slowly that [C] way
[Eb] If [Dm]
[C] [Fm] [Ebm]
not [Db] for you
[Abm] New Morning was different.
It was [Gb] comfortable.
It was more like another album.
Winter would [Db] have no spring
I [Gb]
couldn't even hear the [Db] robin sing
[Ab] [Gb] No, I wouldn't [Db] have a [Ebm] clue
If not for [Db]
you
[Gb] The [Db]
[Ab] man can put across a song like no one else can
It just comes through
Someday everything is gonna be different
When [Eb] I paint that [Ab]
masterpiece
