[Dm] [Am] [Dm] [C#] In this morning's Morning Blend Music Box,
Bluegrass music is big and getting bigger in the Bay Area
with weekly jams now happening in both St.
Pete and Dunedin
with a connection to craft beer as well.
That's right, so we have Phil Pate
that's here this morning with us.
So happy to see you, Phil.
And tell us about this whole group that came together
because this just, you brought this group together.
Introduce us to everybody.
Well, they come to the jams that we have and play.
Surge has been to every one, I believe.
But we got Surge Boyakjan on the banjo,
Mike Godwin on the guitar, Rob Williams on the bass here.
And yeah, we just put together this quartet
so we can come and promote it a little bit.
Yeah, so you've been on the show before,
but what I love about this,
what I love about bluegrass music in particular
is you don't necessarily have to have a plan
and it's kind of, that's what's great about it, right?
That's right, it's a traditional art form
so you can interpret it however, you know.
And we can go interpret it at Ale and the Witch
and some good places around the Bay Area
kind of popping up in different bars.
Yep, and Woodwright Brewing Company in Dunedin
is [Dm] hosting a great one.
And it's been well attended up there.
They have a nice patio with a fire out back.
It's just a comfortable place to play and listen to.
And [G#m] there's nothing better than live bluegrass music.
And is that accurate, we kind of said at the beginning,
it's making, I think, a huge comeback.
Are you seeing that?
And when you're playing at different avenues
or venues and stuff, are you seeing that more people
are kind of learning more about bluegrass?
I am, yeah.
We started this at the beginning of the year
and I think the first one we had before Christmas,
about 300 people showed up to listen
and about 30, 40 players.
So, and everyone has been strong.
People have been coming out in different folks each time too
so it's a good mix.
You bring them out.
So Phil, some of your music that you play,
you describe it as worldly music.
And so what's your favorite part about [A] bluegrass?
What is the appeal for you to play it?
Oh gosh, I love the instruments.
Mandolin and guitar is what I play in the bluegrass
but I just love the fiddle tunes,
all the instrumental music
and all the technical aspects to play in that.
I mean, it's kind of, it's fun to get down on it.
All right, you can join the jam at Witchgrass Wednesdays
at the Ale and the Witch in St.
Petersburg
or the first and third Thursdays
at Woodwright Brewing Company in Dunedin.
Now here is Phil with a sample of what you might hear
at a bluegrass jam.
This quartet is playing a traditional bluegrass tune.
It's called Red Haired Boy.
