[F] We are in the studio [F#] today with Brad Dukes and Bruce Carver [F] recording
Balron and Bones for Black [B] Sales.
What can you [E] tell me about, let's start with
you Brad, what can you tell me about these instruments?
These are the bones,
right?
They're so old they don't even know how where they came from.
I [G] mean
it's really fascinating because this this is probably [Em] goat ribs, [E] but this is
actually would be cow shin that's been carved down [G] to be a smaller, [F#] you know,
So Bruce, the Balron, what can [E] you tell us about this instrument?
It's a
frame drum and it has not been around as long as the bones.
It's such a cool
sounding instrument and you can get pitch changes [F#] and I really like the [E] idea
of this drum and the bones together because this drum is is liquid and low
and plowing and this one's high in the stratosphere.
What's really cool is the
is the bone this is the most traditional sound because it's the oldest of course
and it's really dense and clackety and you can change [G] pitches by going [F#] look I
can really get rid of that and then [Gm] when you get more girth like [E] say this is a
goat actually a [N] goat rib.
I really love to play with the two different colors
as Steve's doing stereo so we put like ebony over [G#m] on this side maybe right like
right bone and [E] a denser wood.
[B]
[Em] You play these fast [G]
passages and it just looks
like you're it just looks like you're conducting almost.
This is a stroke so
this this is very tight and this is very loose so when this comes out it flips up
and then on the way back I don't play the second stroke at all it's just a
reflection or rebound and the third stroke is because I've stopped here [Em] and
so you can go very fast by less [C] motion or very slow by a big motion.
So it's
really a gravity instrument.
Wow we need gravity and centripetal force yeah to play bones.
Playing Bauron you're holding the drum which is really cool you're actually
caressing the drum you're actually striking it and you're holding it and
you're you're bending the pitch.
Where are you pushing to get that pitch
bent?
Right here so there's my hand back here that's the palm of my hand so I'm
pressing and or [A] sliding at the same time and then I'm striking above [D#] it.
[A]
[C]
[B] One
of the things that's most fun for me is [D] getting to work with the two of you guys
together [B] because what happens is the percussion
[D] interaction is so different
when you're [Em] making eye contact and I'm watching you [D] guys interact with each
other [B] and it makes it makes such a [A] huge difference whereas if I had thought that
out in [E] advance and I thought okay you play on the beat [D] three and four and then
you play we can do [A] that and I've done that.
[B] Yeah and it's never [D] the same.
The
fun part is we play [Em] together a lot and when something cool happens you go [D] hey
you guys do that again because [E] we stumble across it from
[A] hours of playing together.
And that's happened on every [E] session where we're
playing and then you'll go try something else and then when Brad and I start
looking at each other and smiling like [F#] okay I'm gonna remember that next time.
Yeah [Em] if you [E] match the hurdy what it's doing it's doing the two [D] sixteenths
leading into two.
[Bm]
Thanks for doing this guys.
Oh thanks for having me.
Next time you guys hear Balron and Bones on TV you know [A] you're watching Black Sails.
Perfect!
