Hi and welcome to Riff of the Week 13.
This week we are going to be looking at Black Knight by Deep Purple.
[B]
[E] [D] [B]
[G] [D] [Em]
[E] [Em]
[D]
[A] [E] [B]
[Em] [B] So Black Knight starts off with a two bar intro and the bass [G] and drums and then the guitar comes in.
We'll look at the riff.
The riff is actually eight bars long but we'll break it down because the first four bars are similar to the second four bars.
But before we start looking at that we have to talk about the rhythm again.
Like a couple of other riffs we've looked at this one has a swing [C#] feel.
So instead of our even eighths again, you know [G#] 1 and 2 and 3 and [N] 4 and, we have the swung feel.
The first note is longer than the second note.
[E] [C#]
So the first part of the riff goes like [Em] this.
[Bm] [G] Now the entire riff is based around E minor pentatonic.
It's playing [E] from the third finger at the seventh fret of [B] the A string.
[Em]
What we're doing here is we start off [G#] third finger seventh [E] fret of the A string.
[G] Then what we do is first finger plays the fifth fret of the D string and then it goes back to the seventh fret of the A string again.
[Dm] And then after we've done that we play fifth fret of the A string.
[D] [G] And then we end it with seventh fret of the E [B] string [G] going up to the fifth fret of the A string [D] again.
[B]
So when I put that [A] together [E] it's
[G]
[D] [B] [B]
one more time.
[Bm]
[B] The second bar of the riff sounds like this.
[A] What I'm doing here is I'm starting off [G] once again third finger seventh fret of the A [E] string.
Then I have these four notes.
First finger plays fifth fret of the [B] D string.
Third finger seventh fret of the A string again.
Then third finger plays seventh fret of the D string.
And then first finger plays [E] fifth fret of the D string.
[G] So I have this.
I start with the first note, the 7 again.
And we end that off with seventh fret of the A string again.
So the six notes.
So if I play it again [A] it's [G] a wee bit slower.
[C#]
Just like that.
And the next two bars, [G] bars three and four.
In bar three what I [G#m] do is I play 5 to [A] 7 on the A string.
And that 7, the third finger's [G] a staccato note so it's cut off short.
So it [D] sounds like
[B] [G] So as I said, on previous riffs [A] if you mute the strings, you know, with the left and the right hand you can cut off that sound.
[D]
And [G#] then in bar four we have the same rhythm but this time we're playing first finger fifth fret of the A string.
Second finger plays seventh fret of the D [Em] string.
And then third finger plays seventh fret of the A string.
[B]
[G] So if we put those first four bars together we get [B] something like this.
So if we [D#] play those first four bars again [C#] slowly.
[Em]
[D] [Bm] [B]
[D] [C#]
[G]
Okay.
Now the next four bars are the same.
But what we do is we [B] start off with that grace note, [G] the seventh, on the [A] A string.
So instead of starting [Em] off, [B]
we [F#] now start with a quick hammer-on from 5 to 7.
Just like that.
Okay, so when we put those all together this is what we get for the eight bars intro.
[N]
