How did you and Paul McCartney get together?
Well, I know Paul from actually from out here.
I've been living in out here and on the East End since the [Ab] 80s, the mid 80s, and had a
house right here in East Hampton, right down the road, and got to know Paul through my
attorney who is related to Paul.
And I'd met Paul a few times at different gatherings, and he was my, Alexa's uncle.
He used to go, I'm your Uncle Paulie, and he'd dangle on her knee, on his knee, and
she'd be going, aah!
It's Paul McCartney, it's Paul McCartney.
[Eb] Aah!
And I, [N] it's Uncle Paulie, I know, it's okay, here, you take her, all right.
And became friendly, and when we knew we were going to play at Cher's, I got a call.
Paul, and asked him if he could come.
Now, originally, we were only supposed to play one night at Cher.
It was the last play at Cher.
The tickets blew out in like 20 minutes, and a lot of people were really angry that they
didn't get tickets, and there was scalpers involved, and I thought the only thing that
would, the right way to do this is to put another night on sale.
So it became the last double play at Cher.
But the people who bought the first night tickets were really pissed off.
They were like, oh, aah, boo, we thought we had a one-off, and now it's going to be two nights.
It's like, you can't win.
No matter what you do, you suck.
No matter what you do.
So I called Paul, I said, look, can you, we're going to do two nights at Cher Stadium.
Can you come to a show?
And he looked at his calendar, and this is exactly what happened.
He said, I've got a visitation with my daughter, and I can't do it.
I said, oh, I understand, look, you've got to see your kid, you know, definitely.
I'd love to come, but I can't do it.
And that was the end of that.
And I thought it was just nice that he considered even doing it.
And that was the end of that.
And then I get a, the second show we're doing at Cher, I'm driving from my home to Cher
Stadium, I get a call on my cell phone.
Hello?
Hey, Billy, it's Paul.
I'm thinking, Paul, Paul Reiser, you know, Paul Arnone, some kid I knew when I was a kid.
No, it's the other Paul.
Yeah, it was that Paul.
And he goes, well, I'm leaving from London, and we're going to try to get to New York,
but I don't see how we can do it.
Logistically, it's not possible.
The flight lands at such and such a time.
So I don't, well, thanks for thinking of it.
Thanks for trying, man.
But hey, you know, what are you going to do?
So we're doing the gig, and somebody comes up to me while I'm on stage, I think it was
one of the last songs, taps me on the shoulder, and was it Max?
Steve?
Was it Max?
Christy, who was it?
Was it Max?
Okay.
And goes, the Eagle has landed.
He's here, but he landed at JFK.
Here we are at Shea, next to LaGuardia.
No way he's going to be able to get here.
And they got him through to an uncle who was in the police force and the Secret Service
and the customs people and the immigration people.
Everybody just wanted him to get to Shea Stadium.
And he showed up.
We walked on stage with his original Hofner bass that he played back in 65.
He was tuning it with a butter knife.
And everyone was like, this
