All right in today's free jazz lesson video.
We're going to be taking a look at some bill Evans chords
Bill was a harmonic genius.
He really just had some fantastic core voicings
These particular core voicings were just about to do have some really nice chromaticism in there and the top note voicings are incredible in there

All right, [Ab] so here's our bill Evans chords the chords.
We're going to be playing our a minor 7 flat [A] 5
_ [C] 7 altered
_ [D] Okay, it's [G] a G minor the 9 and 11 [Gb] and then down into
_ [Bm] C 7 with a sharp 11 and a 9 so let me play it with a groove
And then [E] I'm going to explain how I'm getting these [A] notes in these voicings, so we're gonna go _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [E] _ _
all right
So let's break these [G] voicings down the first voice thing.
I'm playing like I said is a minor [Am] 7
_ [G] _ Flat 5 with some added tensions on top, so let's [Cm] take a look at how I build this chord
[A] So here's a which functions as one here's [C] C.
Which functions as the flat third
[Eb] Here is E flat which is my flat 5 so normally a [Am] minor is like this
[C] But essentially I'm going to do is I'm lowering the fifth year the E, and I'm [D] lowering it down to E flat
Okay, so this becomes a diminished chord on the bottom
Okay, get our G.
Which is minor seventh all right, and [G] then on top here
I have a natural 9 okay, so [Gb] here's
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 [B] 9 Okay
Be there, and then [G] I have my 11th.
Okay, which is D.
Of course the 11th is the same thing as the [Bm] 4th
1 2 3 [D] 4 okay 4
It's 11 up there so 4 5 6 7 [Db] 8 9 [A] 10 11
So here's [Cm] the voicing right here all right, and this is very good 11th.
What he does is he likes to [G] stack this major chord
_ [A] Whole step below my bottom chord you can [G] see
Okay, so we're just throwing this chord up an octave.
Okay.
This G chord
[Cm] _
All right, so here's a minor 7 flat 5 with added tensions, and then this chord right here.
This is D7 [Gb] altered
Okay, [Gm] so here's how I'm getting these notes [C] right here, okay?
So [D] here's D.
Of course and I'm not playing a root in this voicing [G] what I am doing is
I'm playing [Gb] the third which is F sharp
[C] _
C which is the flat 7 here, okay?
Okay, so just third and seventh which are really the most important notes of any seventh [F] chord here
I have F.
Which is considered the sharp 9
Okay, I have B flat which is the flat 13 [D] and then just up top here
I just hit the root of this [Bb] B, okay?
Okay, and then for [C] a second.
I slide up just for a second into the E flat which [D] functions as the flat 9
[Gb] Here's 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 [E] 9
Okay, E is normal 9 and [Ebm] E flat would be the flat 9 of course.
I'm just playing it up here

Okay, now [C] here what I do [Eb] is then I resolve to a [G] G minor chord, okay, [G] so here we have G
[Gm] B flat my root and my flat [Bb] third okay
my right hands
[F] Really what I'm playing my right hand is playing an F triad, okay?
[Bb] So but then F functions as the minor 7th or the flat 7th, okay? _
A is my 9
[F] Alright, and the C is the 11th once again.
It's just this F triad [Gm] really on top of like a G minor
Okay, so we've got so far we've [A] got

[C] _ _ _ [G] _
Okay, so there's that chord again, and then I do this little chromatic motion down, so I [Bb] go
_ So I'm just [B] going [A] okay, which is sort of just an inner voice motion bills really famous [E] for doing this type of stuff
[Gm] _ _ Okay, [G] so I go C B [A] flat a
_ [G] G so I'm just kind of moving down the scale here okay into a [E] C7
Sharp 11, so let's talk about this.
[C] This is C.
Just my roots my scale [E] degree 1
Which is a third B flat is the flat 7th
But I [Gm] have 9 which is D, and then I have [D] my sharp 11, okay?
[D] So let's talk about how I got these notes right here, okay, so we got 1 2 3 [G] 4 5 6 7 8 9
[B] 10
[F] 11 because these are all of course parts of the C scale, and then I have [Gb] sharp 11, which is just a half step [Gb] higher
Okay, [C] there is the chord [D] Right there
so you're very Bill Evans [G] like all right, so [N] let's play it one more time and
