Good evening Internet
I've come to you from a slightly different location today
I'm down south spending some spend a little bit of time with my family
And my little sister has this bass.
It is a Besson BE 982
Sovereign E flat bass now I've talked about the E flat bass a number of times in previous videos
so I'm not going to talk too much about the characteristics of
The instrument in general but more specifically point out a couple of things about this particular implementation of
That instrument now one of the first things to note is that this instrument is not designed for marching
Not sure whether this has come out of the factory in this particular
Configuration or whether it's been modified, but it doesn't have any wear to place a belt or a strap
There would normally be a hook here, which is not there there would
Alternatively be a knob [G] at the bottom of the bass here.
That's not there either
There is one little loop here, but of course you can't really do much with one little loop by itself
So if you were to take this particular instrument marching you wouldn't have [C] a particularly enjoyable time
Getting a strap or some sort of holding system configured while I've got the instrument turned around
You can see the reverse sides of the compensating valve mechanism
These additional tubes that come into play only when the fourth valve is in use
You can see a little bit more about the compensating valve systems in this video by clicking this link [Ab] here
Or by clicking the link down in the description below quite a fascinating subject
but from the reverse you can see how the instrument is folded in around itself and
In general this is quite a comfortable
[N] Comfortable bass to hold and play you will notice that the crook the lead pipe
Has a nice comfortable angle so you can comfortably
Sit this instrument on your lap and not have to strain or stretch to reach the mouthpiece if you will see if you
Familiar with my latest or my previous review on the John Packard bass the mouth
The mouthpiece comes straight around here the lead pipe comes straight around here
So you have to really hoist it up on yourself when you when you hold it that is not a problem that affects the space
So that is the physical
Characteristics of the space now on to some of the musical characteristics, and I must admit that I'm not
Entirely impressed some of the upper intervals of the harmonic series get very flat
That may just be a combination of me the mouthpiece and the instrument or it may just be something systemic with this instrument
I don't have anything else to compare it to so I can't really advise
but there is no doubting that some of the higher intervals go flat and
Some of the low notes where you have to employ the fourth valve get very very difficult to play because the amount of back pressure
That you have so if I start
Start at the octave of the fundamental because I can't I have no idea what this note is and
What will it be it'll be an a I guess on the B flat scale?
But if I start there and go down you can hear me struggle to get some of these notes
[Eb] [D] [C] [Bb]
[Ab] [G]
I
Can get that pedal motive a little bit better if I was warmed up
But things like that very low note where you got the fourth first third and fourth very difficult to place that
There is [Ab] a lot of wooliness a lot of resistance a lot of difficult to getting the air through all of the loops of this tubing
[B] I've encountered less resistance [N] on some other basis, so it's a little bit of a disappointment
But that is really all I can fault with this instrument the tunefulness up high
Which is actually being a characteristic of pretty much every bass that I've played and a real
Stuffiness to get some of the low notes where you've got the fourth valve in use
It's a side effect of the compensating mechanism, but it would be nice if somebody figured out a way around that so anyway
I'll do a little bit of a demonstration of a piece.
I've got the Swan
Which is
From a composers piece the carnival of the animals account.
I think say songs wrote it
I can't really remember, but I've got that in front of me
