Behind The Song: "Skin Deep" (part 1) | Playing For Change chords
Start Jamming...
[A] [F#m]
[E] We're rolling?
Yep.
Okay, great.
[A] Well, thank you again so much for doing this.
Thank [Am] you!
It's amazing to see you and your beautiful baby.
I've been around a while.
And, [Em] yes, I wanted to talk to you today about [G#] Skin Deep Across America, a video we started here just about three years ago.
[A] What does the song Skin Deep mean to you, and why do you [F#m] feel it's a message that's so needed in today's time?
[E] I think it's in the world [D] of social media and [A] just instant information and instant responses and [F#m] answers.
I think that people [F#] really need to [E] remember [B] that we're all human, and we all share some of the same emotions [G#] and hopes and dreams and challenges.
And to be able to respect where we all come from, but also to be able to [A#] come together and be kind to one another, [E] I think is really important.
And that's what Skin Deep, how that resonates with me and those lyrics, just treating people the way you want to be treated.
[A] Son, it all comes [E] down to just one simple rule.
[F#m] That you treat everybody just [D] the way you want them to treat [A] you.
Skin Deep.
[F#m]
Skin Deep.
[A] We can use a lot more kindness.
We can use a lot more compassion.
I think the song resonates with us because it's what we stand for.
It's the mission of why we exist.
That we are stronger united [B] than divided.
It's about humanity.
It's about beauty.
It's about love.
Loving each other.
Respecting each other.
And treating each other with the respect that we all deserve.
[G#m] [F#]
[E] Skin [F#] Deep.
[B]
My name is Scott Fetters from Chicago, Illinois.
Been [N] involved over the years through Chicago Music Commission, ChicagoMusic.org.
Now have launched 2112 in an effort to bring together Chicago's music industry and promote everything that's happening in Chicago.
And now tell me, how did you originally come up with the idea for Skin Deep?
Tell me a little bit about the story, how these pieces all came together.
So the project has evolved over the years.
The initial thought, Paul Natkin and I were working really on an initiative to promote Chicago.
To promote the quality and diversity of Chicago's talent.
I was familiar with Playing for Change.
And thought that we could replicate what Playing for Change has done all over the world throughout Chicago's neighborhoods.
Contacted, I had an email draft sitting in my outbox for about six months to mark and never ended up sending it.
It took me about six months to send it.
I hit send, just asking if there was a way to involve Playing for Change.
Mark wrote back immediately and said, yeah, let's do it and I want to be involved.
So the project really evolved from a concept of promoting Chicago, promoting Chicago's artists to really taking a look at the violence in Chicago.
And seeing if there was something we could do to address that.
As we were working on that project, it really became evident that this was a problem all over the world.
And let's involve artists throughout the country, really to address [F#] this problem.
I'm gonna sing [A] with you.
Skin deep, [F#m] skin [E] deep.
I need you.
[D] Go out!
[E] [A] Skin deep.
I was saying that [A#] I did my ancestry DNA and I'm everything.
Everyone is everything.
Right now we have a lot of polarization and society needs something to bond us, which is music.
[Bm] And I think the message on this song, I think it was Buddy's mom who gave him this advice.
She was a deep woman.
She knew, she knew life.
We're all interconnected.
People like to compartmentalize [F#m] themselves and pretend we're not, but we are.
We're one universal global family.
[E] Skin deep.
[D] No one can [Em] take [B] it.
Skin deep. [G#m] Skin deep.
[F#] [E]
